Santera
Santera, I am a pagan in these modern times
in yesteryears I would have been burned
at the stake for my heretic crimes.
Now we seem to be objects of curiosity
fodder for b rated movies or the products
of backward, superstitious societies.
The masses are truly wrong
their lack of understanding underlines
how ignorance and arrogance have gone too far.
How their impertinent fear of the unknown
have kept the truth in the dark for too long.
Santera, with the title comes’ power
but also much responsibility, healer,
teacher, keeper of the lore and spiritual leader
none of which are to be taken lightly;
we are, for our communities,
the heartbeat and tradition keepers.
An ancient belief of pre-Christian times
that has survived genocide, war and slavery,
colonial integration, modernization
and last but not least modern education;
we… are… still… here in this generation
doing what we have always done
living our traditions in this civilization.

You Know Grace In my extensive studies I have learned that most ancient cultures have some sort of ancestor/nature worship that with some luck has not disappeared totally as a matter of fact they are slowly coming back to the forefront because people are tired of the empty rhetoric of the modern main stream religions.
Here is another interesting fact most of the ancient beliefs do not conflict with modern religions you can practice both, BUT the "new" anglo-christian religions abhor if not vehemently condemn all the old beliefs. what do they fear?
Thank you Grace for reading this piece.

As I was saying to Grace in the above comment, most of the ancient cultures know the value of such things and as a matter of historical and cultural pride they keep these practices alive, its the ultra modern that feel these practices shameful and backward. Thank you my witchy kindred for reading and commenting. ;)

Re: Santera
I've read this twice and studied your comments as well!
It's true that you learn something new every day and if it's warranted, you take it in good faith and apply it to your life where needed! I've learn enough in this beautiful masterpiece to seek deeper in other religions and cultural backgrounds.
There is great wisdom in your pen, Red! It's an honor to read and learn from you! Thank you for sharing! Xoxo

Ms.Rain it is you who greatly honors me with your generous comment. Humbly I say to you that if my knowledge seemed wise and worth learning, than I have done my duty towards you and honored my ancestors. It is as it is supposed to be, those of us who have heeded the calling to keep our culture's legacy alive have a solemn duty to teach it to those who may no nothing of it.

I admire your honesty and sincerity in this poem, my friend...old customs and traditions which are deeply rooted in our veins were suppressed by the "conquistadors" out of fear of reprisal from our ancestors. But, they were wrong! The flame is continuously burning...

It does indeed! Those of us who have taken up the task, must bring it forward into the light so that it continues to burn bright for the future generations. The greatest crime in life is to let our beautiful cultural beliefs die, it is our unique fingerprint as a people. I for one would weep such a loss. Thank you for reading my friend.

I Love to see such WONDERFUL truths...who better than You to Pen them!!!
Always Love visiting---I have longed for spiritual unity since I was old enough to feel the hypocrisy of the "faithful" man.
Writ in Wisdom Dear Red!!!

I love ancient cultures and what you have described here entices me greatly. I was watching a documentary about the Inca the other day . . . and wasn't it beautiful? Their ways, their beliefs. Compared to what we have now . . . this pretense and shallowness and noise and vacantness of thought . . . what we have now seemed incomparably empty.
I love this poem, Red. I have become your fan.

I agree wholeheartedly Demo, I think many are experiencing the religious vacuum, where the main stream religions are not adaptable to the times we live in and are so insular that it alienates its parishioners and congregants. In sharp contrast the old beliefs were and are more in sinc with nature and with us as natural beings. Thank you for your loyal patronage I appreciate the following.
