Reflection

Mirrors;
They often tell you things you don’t want to hear;
Things you’ve known yourself but have spent years,
Trying to unlearn.
The thing about mirrors is,
They can only show you what is in front of them.
Mirrors have no life.
All you can see in them is that life that is you,
And when no life is left to be shown,
That death that is you.
Mirrors make no reservations and have no hesitations
In showing you you; all of you.

It’s as if the world were trying to retell your story,
Trying to make sense of all you give it.
And sometimes it tries that through people.
When you look into someone else’s eyes
You tend to see all that you are
And all that you are not.
Those inescapable mirrors perched on every head;
Those ones that never lose tag.
Those ones that, when they find you alone
Make you see your face.
Your face; physical, spiritual, everything.
Those things that call themselves you.

And when you meet you,
You meet a stranger.
That person you’ve been avoiding forever.
And ‘you’ are not always who you want.
Or where, or when, or how you want it.

I love life, I love mirrors.
For although they both slap you in the face sometimes,
Although they rear their heads inconveniently
And although your tears fall hard,
They always give you a chance.
You can never change those old reflections,
But you can alter the ones you are making now.
You can stand some other place
So that your image can be reflected at a different angle.
Mirrors are not enemies.
They are the point at which you encounter you and your destiny.
All that you put in front of them is all you get back.
And, likewise, all you change in front of them
Will change in reality.

So that point where you meet you;
Whether it is in the eyes of a friend or enemy,
Or in a stream,
Or in your bedroom,
Ask whether you like all you see.
If so, smile and let it reflect all over your life.
If not, take off your clothes and
Change your outfit.
