The Coffin
There’s an eerie silence as I open the door,
Then my footsteps echo on the stone floor,
Stained glass windows all around,
My heartbeats racing, will I be found?
I walk down the isle towards the alter,
My heartbeats still racing, will it falter?
There’s wooden seating down each side,
Where many tears have been cried,
Where many people have sat and prayed,
Is this where memories start to fade?
Then as I look, as I look and stare,
People start to appear everywhere,
Sat in the seats, their eyes full of tears,
I know them all; I’ve known them for years,
Then I notice my sisters, and also my brothers,
My girlfriend, my children, my step dad my mother,
Why are they here? Why are they praying?
I notice the priest, but what is he saying?
Then as I walk closer he mentions my name,
As he looks at a coffin all wooden and plain,
I run to the front to see who’s passed away,
To look in the coffin so that I might pray,
But as I look in the coffin I can’t believe what I see,
The person in the coffin, the person laid there is ME.
