POEMS AND SHORT STORIES
Poet Introduction
Two of the cats i live with piss in my shoes. My wife either doesn't, or her piss smells like the second cat's.
< what i saw on my psychedelic drug trip >
If you think green dogs
are interesting then maybe
you shouldn't read any further
as what i'm about to say might
influence you to try drugs that
make green dogs though it's not
that i want to influence you to
not try them either it's just
that i wanted to write this
without adding any more guilt
about feeling good or bad or
neither or wonder or whatever
but if green dogs really don't
interest you then it doesn't
matter that much so go ahead and
read the rest of this which has
to do with a green...

< remedial measures for diseased poultry >
and even then you touch above my belly
run your self down there
(between)
...this spark of spring
whose gentle hammer plays our heads
and switches us to major chords
that bind our thoughts
to all this greening growth
you say me with your mouth
and mine with yours
and promises they die so splendidly
how slight our light breath moves
across these leaves

< today, i'm bringing about world peace >
This morning i was thinking about world piece
while masturbating in the shower and all that
righteous energy felt so good i hurt myself
but it's only a little tear and though it did
bleed a lot it was a small price to pay for
bringing about world peace.
After that i went to the grocery store and got
one of those giant bottles of cheap wine and
after a few glasses i can feel it happening:
i'm bringing about world peace.

< a bit like scalps >
Today I was at an old friend's house
because he was replacing some flooring
and needed help moving furniture
and there were these two berets
in a drawer and he said they had
belonged to some Russians who were
pretending to be Bulgarian advisors
in this African country where he had
worked security for an oil company
and the men who worked for him had
found out they were Russians and had
shot them and given him their hats;
"a bit like scalps" he said.

< a visit to the park >
From the Payne Whitney Psychiatric Clinic
beside the East River on the Upper East Side of Manhattan,
it's seven and a half blocks east to Central Park.
Which, today, is where I'm headed.
I put on my yellow coat, walk south a block, and turn onto 67th Street
so i can stop by the 67th Street Branch of the New York Public Library.
I'll turn in my books, go to the park, then get some more on the way back.
Where 67th hits 5th Ave there's a memorial to the 107th New York Infantry
Regiment.

< the monday after it happened >
it's bare
you stare
your windows
thoughts
your meaning
movement
moment
you
your stare
it's never now
it's there
the room
emotions bled
no mention of
what can't be said
the dead
what can't be said
your stare
it's bare
the black
the black
it never gives us...

the medication
the one i started
the one that started working
too expensive
i can't afford it
welcome
welcome to the USA
no job
the fuckers
they fire me
the fuckers
they don't trust me
and
they ARE right
no meds
no meds to make it better
no meds to make it right
to make me
less

< so just leave me >
it's a dark night
and a lost night
and a thin
wasted moon
it's a ghost moon
a pale moon
and it gives me
no light
and you
you have changed now
you have changed us
to no more
so just leave me
you just leave me
you just leave me
alone
you
have decided
have decided
your heart
so just leave me

< in the doll house >
at night
in the doll house
sometimes
it's scary
but in the day
it's empty
just the silence
except
when the dogs bark
their barking
barking that we hear in movies
barking that assures us it's real
though even we know
we know it's just a movie
even though we're really here
we're really in the doll house
so
why do they try?
whoever is
whoever is outside
while we
we only want to...

memories
of weakness
of missiles
of the blurred hero
of the documentary and the fiction

of the punishment of devils
of the worship of superstition
memories

of artists who are busy saying:
"this is a world where one idea,

let's pick the one that sells"

< the great white birds have come back to us >
the great white birds
have come back to the bay
those great white water birds
busy breeding again
busy grabbing their fish
busy swooping overhead
those great white birds
back from the shadows
here again
here in the bay
the shadows of their wings
making the sun blink
so here's a salute
to the Baytown Rod, Reel, and Gun Club
to my father and my mother...
