Once We Were
Occasional tears
never do dry
because it mattered
the reason I cry
A bit of me broken
yet living on
despite the pain
from a time now gone
Memories recalled
reminded of your scent
fond recollection
moments we spent
Once lovers, now friends
both of us changed
the future we had
has been rearranged
From love that was
I shall not hide
for you always
a place aside
never do dry
because it mattered
the reason I cry

Anxiety
Happening again
I am reeling
impotent to change
the way I’m feeling
racing thoughts
cannot breathe
panic envelops
no reprieve
chest heavy
fists are tight
anxious, scared
fight or flight
unable to run
wanting to hide
frozen in place
pain inside
body shaking
I close my eyes
no one there
to hear my cries
I am ill
there is no buffer
in distress
alone I suffer
I am reeling

Majority Rules
So very high and mighty
upon your stepping stool
belief you are of greater value
simply because you rule
Born of privilege
of this you cannot ignore
built solely on the backs
of the needy and the poor
Reaping benefits
meant only for a few
Assuming superior
from an obscured view
Disadvantaged
no capacity for compassion
pretending you are worthy
based on the clothes you fashion
All that was provided
only makes you weak ...

The Calm in Crisis
In the midst of chaos
I am at peace
holding my hand
on the valve release
Always the mediator
for any crisis afloat
in need of saving
I am the life boat
Akin to disturbance
our lives interlace
tell me your troubles
I will hold your space
Traumatic events
I know them well
your secrets kept
not meant to tell
Truly belonging
in the heart of the storm
normal for me
where I was born
In turbulent times
I am at home
here I am calm
my place is known
I am at peace

Spiritual Living
Melodic voice whispering
promise of grace
sensing a higher entity
ideals to embrace
With honest gratitude
reaching profound existence
held in high esteem
affording a moral sense
Becoming rooted in service
for the poor and indigent
secured in a spiritual faith
unbroken and benevolent
Small gestures offer us blessings
of compassion and humility
a noble and worthy virtue
with sincere authenticity
promise of grace

Such is Suffering
Troubled, distressed
trauma and woe
unwavering discomfort
enduring sorrow
Feelings of anguish
consumed by despair
unfortunate hardships
a heavy cross to bear
Amid charred ashes
of loss and tragedy
existence, not living
bounded, unfree
Such is suffering
this human condition
seemingly endless
with no remission
Twilight of death
a wretched place
ultimately necessary
that I may find my grace
trauma and woe

Your words brawling
behaviour appalling
in quarrel you demean
Attacks are brutal
my resilience crucial
declining to be your victim
Believing your actions
simply minor infractions
knowing not the wounds you leave

Upon awakening you regret
hurting those you’re meant to protect
no direct appeal for redemption
Professing your sin
to your God within
assuming you will be saved
My dear, you have been deceived
as only the aggrieved
have the authority to forgive

Resilience
Sometimes I tire
of being resilient
never broken
yet often I am bent
An ardent longing
quietly in existence
not constantly met with
discomfort and resistance
Is it excessive
to desire such peace?
avoiding pain
wishing its cease
Craving relief
from what is unfair
respite required
unanswered prayer
Aware of lessons
meant to be learned
an uncomplicated path
I believe I have earned
Paid due diligence
my biography
awaiting a fair turn
to live in harmony
of being resilient

I Am Me
That which makes me vulnerable
also affords me strength
protecting those I love
to any needed length
Kindness and compassion
for disadvantaged and meek
belief in service

a walk in your shoes

MISCELLANEOUS POEM

Beneath the Glass
Far from the shallows
beyond the undulating swells
under toe carries into the deep
of a vast, omnipotent sea
Sinking below the quiet surface
feeling the cold depths envelop
uncharted voyage, I’ve come to seek
sensing the maelstrom develop
Treading just beneath the glass
holding breath yet barely able
drifting slowly off to sleep
pausing here, I turn my will over
Underwater, I seem to breathe
impressions of lost memories
fearless now, I do not weep
how I have longed for this comfort
Familiar...

Mother
Assuredly I struggled
in the days when I was young
not knowing at the time
life’s education had begun
My mother taught respect
compassion and responsibility
her influence invaluable
precious, her gift of sensibility
Strong in her convictions
as I rarely followed rules
learning from mistakes
she provided the tools
Never passing judgement
loved with her whole heart
a trait I did acquire
coveted now that we’re apart
Losing her when young
tragic watching her go
truly grateful for her...
in the days when I was young
not knowing at the time

uncivilised

community in decline
Humble bee
on a mission
flying too far from its hive
horticultural duty
to pollinate
away from its queen, unable to thrive
Artists and poets
living to create
unfortunately lacking muse
desperation
on their journey
darkness assuredly ensues
Depraved indifference
radical belief
death, one cannot repair
in holy war
no side wins
