LOVE POEM

brother
4 am:
i was crying on the floor for no apparent reason
i stare at the ceiling, an intense argument in my mind
i pick myself up and let myself drown
on the foot of my brother's bed
i thought i had mastered the intricate art of silent crying
but my trembling body woke him up
and he prompted me to spill what was overflowing
for a moment or two, i regretted that aired my show
and i convinced myself that he was like everyone else
so i forced my eyes to remain unopened
and wished to disappear for hours, seemingly years
...

i went to the dentist
because they said
they could fix my smile
i went inside
and sat on the chair
they put things in my mouth
while i lay there and ached
it was a lovely purple room
and she wore lovely purple gloves
just before sunset
i went home
but it seems
even the dentist could not find
my smile

it was on a friend's birthday dinner
i hadnt seen you in a long time
and i convinced myself
that you somehow forgot
about my existence
we sat on the floor
the four of us
a sloppy circle
your body right across mine
a deck between us
and ice cream
and drinks
and seemingly the universe
we played games
i wanted to win
i wanted you to win more
but what i wanted most was you
