POEMS AND SHORT STORIES
Poet Introduction
You wanna fly? You've gotta give up the shit that weighs you down.
Mother
Becoming a mother saves me
I love my mother more
for the sacrifices she made
and the neglect she endured
I’m happy to be at the giving end
my children have a mother
and grandmother
with broken chains, healing scars
I’ve longed for the days
of giving back the kind of love
I never fully felt
I love my mother more
for the sacrifices she made
and the neglect she endured
I’m happy to be at the giving end
my children have a mother
and grandmother
with broken chains, healing scars
I’ve longed for the days
of giving back the kind of love
I never fully felt

Mother’s Day
You know I love flowers so you bought me flowers
But you didn’t know I’d be hungry after working
You blamed me for not preparing ahead
even though you scrambled to get a gift on Mother’s Day
I tidied up the house for your family to come over
You let your mom cook the food she wanted
And I didn’t get to see my mom that day
there was no time left to celebrate other moms
Did you see the mother in me?
But you didn’t know I’d be hungry after working
You blamed me for not preparing ahead
even though you scrambled to get a gift on Mother’s Day
I tidied up the house for your family to come over
You let your mom cook the food she wanted
And I didn’t get to see my mom that day
there was no time left to celebrate other moms
Did you see the mother in me?

Motherhood
How long do you stare at her
after trying so hard to get her to rest
How long do you hold her
With her mouth to your nipple and breast
How tired have you been
when rocking her to sleep at night
How many tears have you cried
feeling guilty, after the smallest fight
How many years did you wait for this
not knowing how much you misunderstood
How many times did your heart fill up
from every moment of motherhood.
after trying so hard to get her to rest
How long do you hold her
With her mouth to your nipple and breast
How tired have you been
when rocking her to sleep at night
How many tears have you cried
feeling guilty, after the smallest fight
How many years did you wait for this
not knowing how much you misunderstood
How many times did your heart fill up
from every moment of motherhood.

Never Again
The loneliness I feel deep within my soul
as my heart cries out with pain never spoken
from fear of repercussion
is but a reminder of the survivor in me
who failed to thrive because of you.
The loneliness I feel is a well dug by you
so that I may sit with sorrow
and remember the things you did
without knowing why.
The loneliness I feel breaks my heart open
and scrapes the scabs from scars
allowing me to speak
about the things thought I’d forget.
as my heart cries out with pain never spoken
from fear of repercussion
is but a reminder of the survivor in me
who failed to thrive because of you.
The loneliness I feel is a well dug by you
so that I may sit with sorrow
and remember the things you did
without knowing why.
The loneliness I feel breaks my heart open
and scrapes the scabs from scars
allowing me to speak
about the things thought I’d forget.

Anxiety
Yell louder
I can’t hear you
I’m too busy screaming.
I can’t hear you
I’m too busy screaming.

Cancer
Mostly unaware of each
Angry thing you say, as if it won’t
Leak into my bloodstream and force my
Imagination to second-guess those
Gangly feelings I push aside, and
Not seeing the sickness I feel is
Acceptance with denial;
Not knowing that I’ve spoken up
Too late
Angry thing you say, as if it won’t
Leak into my bloodstream and force my
Imagination to second-guess those
Gangly feelings I push aside, and
Not seeing the sickness I feel is
Acceptance with denial;
Not knowing that I’ve spoken up
Too late

Gaslight
You ask for the truth
to help me believe
what I said
is not what your heard
and bend the words I speak
as if I can’t hear what I say.
You take my bricks of pain
after you tear down the walls
of suffering I’ve endured
but twist the story to fit your own
by building a fence
around your needs
And the truth is being gaslit
may be better than being on fire
but at least I can smell the fumes
of your deception
and survive this burn
to help me believe
what I said
is not what your heard
and bend the words I speak
as if I can’t hear what I say.
You take my bricks of pain
after you tear down the walls
of suffering I’ve endured
but twist the story to fit your own
by building a fence
around your needs
And the truth is being gaslit
may be better than being on fire
but at least I can smell the fumes
of your deception
and survive this burn

Materialistic
Nice things, no matter how much
should never take the place
of an apology on your lips
or the lack thereof.
Pretty jewelry, no matter the cut
doesn’t undo the hurt
or unsay the words you said
that caused me so much pain
Being materialistic and a lady in public doesn’t change who you are
because you can’t afford
to pay for your own accountability.
should never take the place
of an apology on your lips
or the lack thereof.
Pretty jewelry, no matter the cut
doesn’t undo the hurt
or unsay the words you said
that caused me so much pain
Being materialistic and a lady in public doesn’t change who you are
because you can’t afford
to pay for your own accountability.

Shallow
My heart aches from holes dug
never filled, but with emptiness
those lies you told right in my eyes
and left to sit with me, alone.
never filled, but with emptiness
those lies you told right in my eyes
and left to sit with me, alone.

Unforgettable
My soul gives birth to the pain I’ve felt.
Her breathing is labored with shame.
She raises my memories as a child
who grows with the strength I never had.
Her breathing is labored with shame.
She raises my memories as a child
who grows with the strength I never had.

Alone
I keep looking for
the love you never gave
in all my empty pockets.
I push my hands in
to find the warmth you never had
but fall through holes
and scramble to catch
the lies.
the love you never gave
in all my empty pockets.
I push my hands in
to find the warmth you never had
but fall through holes
and scramble to catch
the lies.
