Materialistic

Nice things, no matter how much
should never take the place
of an apology on your lips
or the lack thereof.

Pretty jewelry, no matter the cut
doesn’t undo the hurt
or unsay the words you said
that caused me so much pain

Being materialistic and a lady in public doesn’t change who you are
because you can’t afford
to pay for your own accountability.

Author's Note
I recently got married. My MIL, who has been very hurtful to me, even up to the week of my wedding, gave me one of her rings to keep. I’ll wear it with my engagement ring.

My husband said I should remember what she gave me when I’m thinking mean things about her. But it doesn’t change the problem. It just gives me something pretty to look at. And a reminder of who she is.
