POEMS AND SHORT STORIES
Poet Introduction
My mother wrote poems when she was younger, mostly about love. Later she returned to poetry to express thoughts and desires that she'd squelched over time. She passed the torch to me (her daughter) when she entered treatment.

Who Would Hold Me Then?
Who would grieve my passing?
What would I pass from?
Or pass to?
Who would hold me then?
Strange thoughts for a woman making love, but they're mine
as we embrace
clinging
wishing for one more second.
It is a joyful thing to be desired by another, even when lust leads to possession.
Possess me now.
It is enough.

Adulterous Desires
I was drawn from
rhythmic dreams by the screech
call of an eagle and wondered if there was
jeering in her tone. Was she laughing at the pair of
frantic insects twitching below as if they were the
sum of all creation?
My arms spanned a meager
five feet across the desert floor and I wondered if she
saw us at all while soaring on her
eight-foot wingspan a thousand feet above.
The selfie my lover and I took
would later give the exact spot of this
love affair in time and space. My eagle friend...

The Edge of Light
Your lips sang
songs taught by elders
from their days of searching for love.
My hips felt
ancient rhythms
that brought us all to life.
My lips kissed
the thrum of carnal songs
with promised pleasures
from the dances of ancestors.
Our flesh holds
firm within bonds
born of souls just beyond the edge of light.

Her smiling eyes meet mine through time,
so much was gained and lost.
She’d given all she was to love
with no thoughts of the costs.
The silver necklace her father gave
fell across her crystal skin.
What he gave to her in purity
was all she wore in sin.
It must have sparkled beautifully
in that cabin’s warming flames.
As bodies swayed that winter’s night
and dropped all binding chains.
so much was gained and lost.

Fire Never Extinguished
Our separate families were drawn from a winter storm to share one remaining cabin.
We sat quietly by the hearth as our parents laughed and and drank wine, eventually finding their ways to warm bedrooms.
“Don’t’ stay up too late,” my father called out.
“OK," I said. "I've got the couch."
In a few minutes we heard the soft murmurs of affection through the cabin walls and you laughed to think your parents might be making love. We were thankful for the fire, and the puzzling warmth left unattended between us.

Forbidden Fruits
Our handmade gifts were given in fear and joy
by young bodies filled with lust and hope for a future.
Oh, what pleasures we found in the making of these gifts!
As imperfect hearts broke over time, we sought pleasure in others.
Fruit once treasured and shared only by two,
fell freely from limbs shaken by strangers’ hands.
Still, I find pleasures in life, sucking sweet juices from forbidden fruits.
by young bodies filled with lust and hope for a future.

As imperfect hearts broke over time, we sought pleasure in others.
Fruit once treasured and shared only by two,

Still, I find pleasures in life, sucking sweet juices from forbidden fruits.

Reconciling Ledgers
To invest in desire is not a casual decision.
In him, I placed my wealth in hopes of gain.
In his child, I expressed faith in our future.
I mortgaged all that I was against his promissory note now in default.
Did not the gods of creation, whoever they may be, prescribe our lusts and give them value?
I severe myself from past indebtedness.
Today, I am free to offer my flesh against yours for our pleasures without concern for the reconciling of ledgers.

Better to Act than Understand
Hearts were at peace until you touched my hand.
From where did these desires arise?
Better to act on pleasing mysteries than understand them.

Flying at Icy Altitudes
Flying at icy altitudes toward what we thought were graceful skies,
We fell against unforgiving rocks where our pounding hearts grasped for one more moment of life.
Finally, pressed together as one, we fell in silence.
