POEMS AND SHORT STORIES
Poet Introduction
My mother wrote poems when she was younger, mostly about love. Later she returned to poetry to express thoughts and desires that she'd squelched over time. She passed the torch to me (her daughter) when she entered treatment.
On This Appointed Night
Their animal selves were
created by the imperfect
love of their parents.
Could those now estranged
lovers imagine the products
of their unions meeting this night,
so unknowing and innocent.
These two young temples were
now at their purest, fully human
and without deceit or calculation for gain.
Their beauty grew greater than the
sum of their parts as they celebrated
the ancient sacraments that bring pleasure
and the ever-present possibility of new life.
On that appointed night, they were merely ...
created by the imperfect
love of their parents.
Could those now estranged
lovers imagine the products
of their unions meeting this night,
so unknowing and innocent.
These two young temples were
now at their purest, fully human
and without deceit or calculation for gain.

Parting
Our love came with costs
accruing silently over time.
When tender hearts
fell against unforgiving rocks,
we grasped in vain for one more moment of life.
There is no rewinding of time.
There is no returning to love.
The only life remaining is in my
parting.
accruing silently over time.
When tender hearts
fell against unforgiving rocks,
we grasped in vain for one more moment of life.
There is no rewinding of time.
There is no returning to love.
The only life remaining is in my
parting.

Human Again
The trembling
that spread
across your face
made me human
again.
that spread
across your face
made me human
again.

If I Could Choose My Death
At the break of dawn, our naked bodies rise and fall with living waters.
What shifting inside the earth caused this tsunami of pleasure to roll over us in a warming sun?
If I could choose my dying, it would be while I’m still beautiful.
If I could choose my place, it would be here with your tangled tendrils holding me like a treasured stone being pulled out to sea.
I want to cease on a dawn like this with your resolute desires holding fast inside me as ever-cresting waves pour over me and I surrender to the briny depths.

Awkward Conversation
The second I came through the front door my fourteen-year-old daughter asked, “How was your date?”
“Fine,” I replied. How else should I answer the offspring of my failed marriage? Could she see the lingering aura of pleasure on my face? Could she read my eyes and see what they had seen?
“He was a true gentleman,” I said, but my eyes gave me away as they saw a replay of his final throbbing thrusts before he knelt over my parted lips. I wondered if she saw any part of the scene as she watched my eyes?
“It was a night to remember, and he asked me out again,” I...

The Taste of Your Fruit
I love the taste of your fruit,
tart and tingling against my tongue.
I’ve sampled life’s pleasures, but to you I return,
now desiring only your succulence,
wholly without bruise or blemish.

Fully Human
Each touch between us
casts shadows
against the stone wall of
what is real,
or what might become.

Vividly Animal
My reflection dances
in the window
facing the night.
I am so vividly animal
in movement
and form.
My thighs flex
in recoil from his
rhythmic dance.
My eyes rise
toward the ceiling
at the moment of his coming.
If animals can pray,
I thank creation for
this most precious life.

I Love My Body With Yours
I love
my body
with yours,
made beautiful
in your completing.
In the taste
of your fruits,
my temporal
earthly vessel
becomes whole.
