On This Appointed Night

Their animal selves were
created by the imperfect
love of their parents.

Could those now estranged
lovers imagine the products
of their unions meeting this night,
so unknowing and innocent.

These two young temples were
now at their purest, fully human
and without deceit or calculation for gain.

Their beauty grew greater than the
sum of their parts as they celebrated
the ancient sacraments that bring pleasure
and the ever-present possibility of new life.

On that appointed night, they were merely
children seeking the mysterious treasures to be
found in another human being.

Author's Note
I wrote this while thinking back to the night I learned my daughter was sexually active. I've treasured this photo from shortly before that time and marvel that her father and I created such beauty in spite of our flawed love. She said I could share these words and this photo.
