To the Core
Searing heat
Ripping flesh
“Mine Casualty!”
Stone-faced corpsman
Dripping blood
Losing life.
Your eyes are glassy
Your lips are pale
“He has no pulse!” (Yelled out.)
Sinew and bone exposed—
To flies
And to cries
Of this useless Cold War.
It is sinew and bone
Shrapnel wounds
“Mine Casualty!”
Explosive punch
To the core
Of resistance
To the Corps
Of the dead Marine.
Life is dripping
Life is running
Life is ripping
Away!
Horrid wounds
Gaping hole ...
Ripping flesh
“Mine Casualty!”
