It All Begins With Smilely
Expresses emotions too risky, too intimate to commit to words
Makes crystal clear or confusingly obtuse authentic feelings or unattainable dreams
Obfuscates passion with encoded fruits and vegetables
Jumbles the intended signal when naively choosing the wrong one
Illustrates a panoply of unnatural, unabashed facial contortions
Sends messages subject to wild speculation by any and all readers

Time for Dinner M'Lady
Patiently waiting
for my signature chicken with rice
to perfectly cook
Hallelujah! The oven timer sounds
I swoon at its dulcet ringing
for its tune conjures a favorite,
romantic torch song
sung, for decades,
by countless baritone crooners
It’s subject being much more famous
and centuries older
that of the captivating beauty
of the Italian noblewoman with the coy,
mysteriously undecipherable smile
her staring eyes alternately whispering
“thou art mine,” or “to you, I’m indifferent,”
or, heaven forbid, “I thee...

Crisis Averted
Sitting atop my throne
pondering the soap scum
encrusted tub
When I spy, uncloaked
against the whiteish porcelain,
a squirming , amoeba
dolphin colored thing.
What kind of fledgling monster could this be?
Prone to risk aversion,
opting to drown
the perplexing invader
before it grew Texas-sized.
Stubborn bugger wouldn’t deign
to go down the drain.
Courage mustered
grabbing the alien with a tissue.
Cautiously unbundling
the mysterious breed.
Identifying the infant, ominous beast
as the innocuous hull...

Obsessed with the Fate of Talented Strangers
Night into early morning
watching compatriots compete
reveling in their disparate regional accents
learning their funny, clever endearing colloquialism
justifying the incessant viewing
with the notions
that I’m learning, from the British
to bake an opera cake, a perfect pavlova,
and to use frangipane in a sentence
or by Australia's aspiring chefs
proper mise en place
or when you’ve stuffed up your marron risotto
Comforted by these ever-present, loyal, exotic friends
available at the press of a button or mouse...
watching compatriots compete

To soften the blow
I’ve heard it said
“sixty’s just a number”
***albeit a big one…
I add under my breath***
optimistically I believe
sexagenarians
still can play
sing, dance have heaps of fun
eschewing the notion
that I’m nye unto death
or that I’ve crossed the border
Into “he’s had a good life” territory

to add to my story

Wake up!
rise and shine!!
I'm off duty
so, get your booty
off my mattress!
I know I'm a haven
from overwhelming stress
but I'm designed for nightly sleep
not permanent press
nor am I a therapist
on your feet NOW
no sitting in long reverie
don't you have places to go
people to see?
now smooth me out all pretty
don't leave me a disheveled mess
you better not go from here
then downstairs to the sofa
it's time to take action
you've done enough relaxing

to warm and...
