had ran out of cornflakes,
so he toasted two slices of bread
then covered them thickly
with strawberry jam,
"A much nicer breakfast!," he said.

A Contradiction in Terms.
I must admit I find it hard to write
pentameter. Tetrameter is best,
the metre which I find, more than the rest,
comes easiest to me. It's nice and tight,
its four/four time beats with my pulse just right,
allowing me to keep my syntax free
of all contortions: conventionally
the lines read on the page. No twistings here,
but simply written words, the meaning clear,
the way I like my poetry to be.
