It's more about finding your target demographic out here more so than good cop/bad cop: good writer/bad writer but what draws you in as a reader? Avatar, voice/tone, message, theme, buzz word?

Here in the Deep (end of the pool) and other Poetry sites,
EVERYTHING & anything might captivate me and cause me to read.
Usually, it's a title or pic but when I read someone new, I will search for the spiritual spills 1st.  If none come unhidden right away, then I move onto the SELF spills and then onto MISC.  Point is, I want to KNOW my author before i read anything smeared from her/his hand.

I am fortunate
in that I spill emotion
and as far as i know, nearly every sentient being Feels (save for the psychopaths and maybe even the sociopaths)  and so, I don't have to find readers.

On Facebook, though, I did find an audience who loved reading Romantic shit.
But then, is this genre not emotion laid?

Yes sure enough, Tallen. There are just certain themes that travel a bit slower. Personally I'm shocked at the traction that I've made in a relatively short time but I've also seen comparable writers who have yet to really be picked up. Philosophy probably travels slowly than politics, politics slower than potentially relationships, love sex/drugs (usually first dibs)..well there is a hierarchy like everything..sometimes also dictated by the various generations being juggled out here. Profound...you said I want to know the author first..so that's interesting...you are in search of their reference point first...I'm just as anal just in different areas..I'm more likely to pull by theme but mostly by who ever is already on my read list and occasionally we stumble on a buzz word that clues me in on an entire piece that actually hits it in outer field for me at least.

Honestly, I am not likely to commit to long poems. I look for something that would fit on a page or shorter.

Good imagery in word selection.

I really like anything that brings out imagery in a poem.

Understandable obtainable metaphor.

I love good metaphor, but not when it's so abstract the meaning is enigma.
