A GIRL AND HER GUN

what do you fear when what they fear is you
are you who'd be standing when the fight is through
if you looked in the future your children would be too
nature intended
its genes be deffended
on superiority it depended
nature would say
the big man has his way
one thing makes a diference  today
how many fights
how many dark nights
how many streets with no lights
when the violence was done
was not the man who had won
the victor the girl and her gun.

FOR OUR TIMES

black
dual chambered
loads so easy

owned a revolver once
Italian forty-five, single action army
had a forty-five Winchester, as well

nothing compared to this one
none can withstand it
blows them away

Warrior Poet

Swathed in mist and fires' smoking,
drums of thunder, daylight's fading.

Songs of ancients drown the whispers
of their women's woolen skirt hems
while the dance is ever building.

See the moon eclipsed in blood rise
at this time of summer solstice.

Cauldron's musical is stirring,
dulcimer and fiddle playing.

Bravado's quickness of their feet
sway bare upon long wooden planks.

Black-wing'ed moods o'er village roofs,
their calls that carry hearts and minds
of warrior poets in the hills

Who forge new swords and bathe the blades
into the falls cascading down
toward rolling emerald valley vast

where preying dragons circle low
the feast they stalk that comes tonight.

Daily I lace these weapons on my feet
Stride into the world saying
Fuck your fashion rules
And assumptions of who I should be
These babies will stomp your judgement like a bug
They don’t need your approval
And neither do I
Push me too far and these boots will kick your ass
That’s why they’re so damn heavy
And chunky
And red

blackberries

my skin stretches like elastic over my knuckles
blackberries planted between the rows
marks too much time with the heavybag
same as my boney knees

my daddy was the first to teach me to fight
not school house fight

jailhouse fight

grab the wrist and turn it thumbs out

fast

same strength it takes to pick up a bag of rice
is all it takes to pop it, he tells me

years later I'm still fighting with my hands
with myself mostly

battling my mind for the release of my soul

but I used daddy's trick in judo class about a month ago
rolling with a guy 60 pounds my senior
he tapped out three times
and in the end said

teach me

same hands I've used to
teach
coddle
and guide my two daughters with

same hands I held my infant godson Ethan Cole with yesterday

one day
He'll say teach me Uncle

More blackberries and kisses
for the harvest
