Rubbish child
A bleak beginning; A twitching seed
Entered inside to a frail plantation
Then a meth-stained umbilical cord
And a child is born, washed of innocence
It seems in the suicide-cycle of the chem'dweller
Love is a fictional bit of wallpaper
Lest an angle reach out
Not all angels have feathery wings
Some have steel-toed boots
A great and terrible uprising of youth
Then your mother left you in a dumpster
And sometimes angles dig through rubbish
When the steel walls whimper
Any passer-by would've dug a baby out
Anybody would've assured it was safe
But I'd say its pretty angel-like to sacrifice
Selling belongings to call it your own
Then do it again to send it college

"Hugs of an Angel"
Oh tiny angel, too young to understand
The miracle you have blessed me with
My guardian spirit resides within you
To have changed me so, so deeply under my skin
You swam through the ocean of my soul
Touched my heart with kindness, unconditionally attached
Taught me that hatred requires you be treated as less
But I could not do that to you, to one harmless and helpless
I could have been just like all the rest, yet you reached into my heart
Made me see through the prejudice crippling my soul
And all the souls who surrounded you never understood
There was an angel in the room, an elephant of good
So much love trapped inside, behind your speechless lips
Still you sang the language that only angels know
Somehow I knew every heavenly syllable your tongue silently told
And freed me from the prison of fear and greed and pride
In this life we may never again embrace in hugs two hearts can feel
But one day we will meet in Heaven because now I know the way
Oh tiny angel, too young to understand
The miracle you have blessed me with
My guardian spirit resides within you
To have changed me so, so deeply under my skin
You swam through the ocean of my soul
Touched my heart with kindness, unconditionally attached
Taught me that hatred requires you be treated as less
But I could not do that to you, to one harmless and helpless

The angel I thought I never knew
Introspective on this night
I thought I might
take a sentimental stroll
through some family mementos,
Finding photos that show
when I wasn't big at all
visiting my great-aunt Ro'
who lived up from the pie,
Wooden stairs painted white
with rails on either side
leading to an open porch
fronting a clapboard house,
Built before the 20's --
how the screen door creaked,
the rooms dimly lit within
and always kept neat as a pin.
Curled in my chair to recall
the scratchy music I'd hear,
a distant echo all alone
from far down the hall:
...you may not be an angel
but still I'm sure you'll do
for until the day that one comes along
I'll string along with you...
Polished floors and walls
and ceilings shone of
daylight from a window
at the back where it ended.
The parlor of faded grace
was the best of all
for me at that age,
wide-eyed and so small
Though I was tall enough
to look through the glass
into a display case full of
a myriad of wonders--
Dolls with bee-sting lips
and finger-wave curls,
of items in miniature
like doll house furniture,
Crystal perfume bottles
still holding deep amber
remnants of dates and dinners
those fragrant nights long ago.
A medal and some ribbons
next to her dead son's bronzed
baby shoes, the one who died
in the war to end all wars.
Hand-painted souvenirs
from faraway places like
Mexico City, Rio and Rome.
From the roof I heard rain,
Breakers churning the beach
drowning the music out of reach,
I couldn't hear it anymore,
the gulls had all flown into shore.
Auntie's care-worn hands fell away
to lower the window shades
toward the end of a day
that was ending too soon.
Taking in the musty smells,
I wanted to stay and never go
with those treasures keeping alive
my kind-hearted, dear Aunt Ro'.

Angels
(a sonnet)
“Where do I look that I do not see God,”
Like five jewels in this moment rising.
So why should it be that angels seem odd?
It is just reasoned mind minimizing.
The other driver slowing down my car,
As I watch as the crashing car go by.
Who hails and pays the cab outside the bar,
Ten wet and drunken blocks now safe and dry.
Who binds wounds at the wreck then disappears,
Or hands me back the wallet they saw drop.
A stranger calming suicidal fears,
With coffee and kind words, my panics stop.
Know that heaven is everywhere we see.
To meet an angel, we can angels be.
Author's Note: all were my experiences...
