Stop...just listen
a song that was woven
through words he shared
freedom shone from choices
to flesh the thoughts he spoke
in wisdom worn through years
and age
skeleton trees abandoned by leaves
shaved through cold winter's breath
in deepest snow the sombre pined
looked out of soul window
pledged his love in icy breeze
to a stranger from sunny skies
stop darling just listen
watch the skies when winter's done
the colours of the starry night
know that everything's alright
soulmates play in Maya field
tied by love they patiently wait
world so still, with bated breath
as love birthed two that became
One...
Heart and Soul.

old romantic places
her eyelids flutter like butterflys, & from her lips
scotched honey drips. sure it’s cliché, but it’s the
practiced skills of every doll who can take a man
quickly to heaven, & quicker to hell…
funny thing about Lill: every time I figured I was over her
for good, & my heart would be made stronger in the
stricken places, she fell into my life again.
we came from the same dismal back streets in the
break-you-down city. even in her teens, she got a rep as a
six-mile whore, although I never saw her with a man. once
at a dance, ‘Treat Me Like a Fool’ busted thru the speakers,
& Lill & another girl both wanted to dance with me. I flipped
a coin & the other girl won. Lill would never dance with me
after that.
sometimes after school I’d swipe a six-pack from the Italian
grocer. we’d cut thru a gangway to a spot where an abandoned
Chevy with no windows was parked. the moon kinda hung low
in the sky only for us as we buzzed off the beer. she’d pretend
she was cold so I could put my arm around her. I guess it was
there that I fell crazy in love with her.
after high school the Army took me. I went into an olive drab
coma of fatigue uniforms & battlefield hallucinations for three
years. I didn’t hear from Lill & didn’t ask my family about her.
when I was discharged, I got married & settled into a clerical
job. a couple boring years passed. one day out of the blue Lill
called, having obtained our number from an old neighborhood
friend. she was hurting & had a short list of possible saviors;
I was the one who answered.
I began taking days off work to spend time with her. my wife
eventually figured it out & left me. we had no plan & no place
to go except down the gutter, so we figured we’d have a few drinks
on the way. our romantic spot this time was a bar with no music,
no crowd, & plenty of rot-gut whiskey. I’d move my chair so close
to her it was like one person, a hideous mix of man & woman, a
deformed caricature of love.
but Lill is a nomad, she comes & goes, still believing she’ll find that
El Dorado that will never be found. she returns to me now & then, &
sometimes it’s good, but mostly it’s not. in due course, my time with
her will end, as all things must.
I suppose I look forward to that…

Lucky Me
enclosed - my legal notice. I do.
What is required?
Each year to grow
For your information only
No action required. I am yours
Believe it or not
It's that time of year
To express my love
Time to celebrate
Every day will be the same
Sit you down, watch your smile
Nothing perfect
A gift from the clouds.
Often the process fails
Let's spend life never apart
Can we really afford?
My invitation to my world
Are you on board?
Build to never destroy
Don’t break - multiply
Avoid the pitfalls
Speak, don't hesitate
Can I make you happy?
Trust the process
Summary of my dedication
Annually is the every day
No need for Valentines
The future report
Retirement by your side
A day with you no night
Included is my heart
Paid in full
What is the value on that?
My days without you
Below zero, sick indeed
Held captive by your lips
Take into account my knees
What else do I need?
I've got it all
I give you my craziness
Numerous headaches
In return, love I invest
What else to say?
Lucky comes to mind.

IF THERE'S...
If there's anything greater than love.
Please let me know.
If there's anything that can hug me when am in pain
Please let me know.
If there is anything that can wipe my tears, absorb my sorrow
Please let me know.
If and only if there's anything;
That can hold my smile.
Prettier than love
That will grow old with me. Longer than love
That will give me strength. Stronger than love
That will heal my pains. Better than love
Please let me know.
I will fly towards it
Swim through it
Break all the rules to have it.
If there's anything greater than love
Please let me know.
If there's anything greater than love.

Love Ain't Nothing But Biscuits
don't drink and shoot arrows
Cupid was cross eyed
he shot the Devil
and she had her eye
on me
love ain't nothing but biscuits
and I was fried chicken
she wanted more than a quick visit
she wanted a mission
cotton candy caught me dancing
now it isn't fair
corn dogs and curly fries
beautiful waist long straight hair
thunderstorm and thunder thighs
handkerchiefs blowing in the wind
we square dance and hold hands
underneath a beautiful mistake
two hearts tired of the heart ache
fireworks but water sprays
hide and seek and duck, duck, goose
lie when we speak but that's not new
jumping jacks in the box
we skip to my lou when we skip rocks
life is a game and love is a trophy
I roll the dice and you roll your eyes
Snow White and Dopey
I play poker you play hokey pokey
we eat watermelon
I seduce them you sell them
we learn to crime
we do the deed but never do the time
they can't watch us
we are sublime
for breakfast people eat pancakes
we eat fear but we don't panic
for some people love is a sandwich
for us love ain't nothing but biscuits
Cupid was drunk at the picnic
don't drink and shoot arrows
Cupid was cross eyed
he shot the Devil
and she had her eye
on me

Mother's love: a failed Villanelle
Don't test me; never test the depths of this mother's love
If stark truth you do not wish to face
My children, they come first always
You second to them, dead last in every case
You said you loved me
I said I loved you too
You said put me first
I said, honestly, that will I never do
Don't test me: never test the depths of this mother's love
One night we went to dinner, just us two
We ordered entrées and did eat
When it came time for dessert, I ordered a snack to take it home
Your eyes flashed for you knew I ordered with her in mind
Stark truth glaring you in the face
We argued as we sometimes did
This time about your speech, which I then asked that you temper when speaking to my daughter
At times, I felt you were too harsh, too peremptory, and too brash
You agreed and so our argument was done
Don't test me: never test the depths of this mother's love
You'd lied to me; this was plain to see
On that Mother's Day, I woke to you yanking my daughter out of bed
Standing over her yelling who knows what, her cowering before you barely awake
That moment, snatched I my daughter up, and spared you not a second thought
Put her in my car, came back in, and grabbed a few necessities
To your pleas with me, this I said:
I told you not to test me: never test the depths of this mother's love
If stark truth (you'll lose!) you do not wish to face
Don't test me; never test the depths of this mother's love
If stark truth you do not wish to face
My children, they come first always
You second to them, dead last in every case
You said you loved me

You Won
Remember the tree
Our special tree
The one in the park
We’d meet after dark
So nobody knew
About me and you
An innocent love
Fits hand inside glove
Rose petals adorning
Until the first light of morning
Then both sneaking back
Like Jill and her Jack
Until our next meeting
Hoping this is less fleeting
Again under the tree
Where you carved you loved me
The heart that I drew
And I carved I loved you
I remember the night
The night with no light
Where you didn’t show
I was scared just to go
Then abruptly a text
That got me perplexed
You now loved another
In fact was my brother
My heart soundly broken
The tree just a token
Of a love that was lies
A cheaters disguise
Feeling sorry for me
I sat round the tree
Using the rain as a cloak
Until morning had broke
Meet me under the tree tonight
It’s alright I don’t want to fight
There’s something you need to see
To see, what you’ve done to me
Alone, I just couldn’t go on
In my heart you were my only song
There will be no more singing
From a branch I’ll be swinging
On our special tree
Where you carved you loved me
I chipped it away
Earlier today
I am undone
You’ve won
