Poetry Contest

write a poem
http://www.firefighternation.com/sites/default/files/styles/slideshow_full/public/sept11slide4_1.jpg

Thirteen years on there's been much to and fro about who and why, but one thing for sure is that the day and subsequent days brought a special kind of bravery from the Fire fighters of the FDNY.

you may have memories of witnessing heroism from other departments or civilians.

this is a tribute comp, so write a tribute to a hero or group of heroes that stood out for you. a pic would be nice but not mandatory.

cheers

rules: whatever style suits

collabs will be awkward to award

      planes don't count as heroes

damn comp is taking the irony away from my avatar

Have you seen the news
all the bodies being pulled from the rubble
lined up on the dust filled streets
let's pray
in the name of god, what's happening to Manhattan
burning, it's burning to the ground
upper lower the only sounds are sirens
racing to zero
those heroes give hope to the world
on this day of darkness
never forget their sacrifice

we were mesmerized, my friends and I
watched the thick smoke plumes conquer the sky
and they and I were sad and afraid
because America was dying
and it felt like hell was on its way

we sat, and we watched while he rang that bell
and they held pictures of their fallen
kept calling out names
each and every one of the missing and the dead

until the bell fell silent
pensive, grief-filled, stony silence

thank’s for your memories, Zazzles. If you’re going to publish that you might want to check ’math and destruction’ near the start of your second paragraph.

Just to reiterate, I’m interested in reading about the heroism of the days.

thanks most much

Take note
What I wrote
ain’t for a vote; ain’t
here to reminisce
yet that space in time that blew the mind
it’ll never make much sense

The Infamy

Felt coast-to-coast
Almost three thousand Souls classified as ghosts
I’m sure they lining up somewhere single file
Started back awhile ago but
it ain’t been a while

WTF!!!

World Trade Fiasco
Long as I live
That’ll NEVER be the way to go

Down

Burnt & twisting steel
For real, what a sound
That day in every way
The place was Zero Ground

First Responders

They went to work and
know
Can’t call it a hobby
Sudden Death came; nothing left

Gone another lobby

Staircase, not a trace
Can’t find uncle’s body

Yeah, they
Wrecked the place
Briefly thought about Sir Rodney

“Cant we just get along?”

Hell NO, so
Hit ‘em through & through
Top to bottom

Old’ Bin Laden
Yeeah.. finally got ‘em

But the...

Pain...still the chill of a HOT day insane
Time heals but hearts still a flame
Some say lucky if you

came
away lame

But them memories that torture
Some will never be
the same

Who blew up the world trade center?
Who shot a missile at the pentagon?
Why is the government lying to us?

The wreckage unimaginable, indescribable.
Body after body, lay dead in glacier
size piles of rubble
some encased in cement~tombs
while others were less fortunate.

TWTC Imploded
it was death overloaded.
Gone in a flash to many lives were taken
NUMBERS DON'T LIE!
654321floored!987654321leveled! 9/11/2001!

I remember September 11th like it was yesterday
my thoughts travel back as I sit here and write.
I am reminiscent.

I was working the 6 to 6 morning shift
at Smooth Groove located at 238th and White plains rd in the Bronx NY.
It's about 20 to 25 minutes away from where it all went wrong September 11, 2001.
Pineapple Mike, walks in for his usual morning Corona
when he stepped up to the bar and tells me to put the news on!
I grabbed the remote and changed the tela~tron immediately!
I turned to Fox news and was watching as the North Tower was on fire.
News reporters were saying "It seems like a routine private flight fell off course,
and that perhaps it lost control and went astray?"
About 12 to 14 minutes later I watched
as a second plane slammed into tower two, the South Tower!
Our local news teams were live on the scene and we
ALL watched in terror and shock as it unfolded right in front of our eyes!
I remember the aftermath and devastation caused by this horrific act of insane greed
Orchestrated by the man we trust and call President, indeed!
I cried for the Blood spilled at the hands of our Nations Capital.
Mothers, Fathers,Sisters and Brothers died because they went to work or school that day.
I'm not sure if the American people understood or understand the truth about what happened
that unfaithful and dark day. America turned it's back on it's people in cold blood!
They killed us for the love of money and took away our liberty and freedom
from which this country was founded on. Our white picket fences and our apple pie
our right to choose, Live Free Or Die. The American dream is now soiled
It's dank and it don't look the same, our government is reckless,I bow my head in shame...

But for the men and women who choose to
believe, to all the rescue squads and unsung heroes,
including PorkChop and other service Dogs
who risked their lives, around the clock,
no sleep, no food, with heavy hearts.
I salute you!

The old man sat in a chair
He was learning how to use a computer
His teacher was much younger, red-haired, and fair
He was there to appease his wife; he was her devoted supporter

After the teacher arrived for the lesson that day
She noticed that he was more quiet than usual
Not hunting or pecking or trying to use the Internet in any sort of way
Hearing the news on the way to school, the teacher thought the 9/11 attacks were so cruel

The first thing she said to the class of ten
Was to ask if they heard the news
Some of the women said that it was a shame, all the mayhem
But the old man lowered his head looking at his shoes

Two thousand and one, September eleven
The television showed emergency personnel being overcome
And plumes of smokes making their way to heaven
There were mere seconds to rescue people, before they would all succumb

Watching the debris of buildings and the airplanes fall
The news reports were somber
It is no wonder anyone made it out alive at all
It makes the human spirit cry out in transcendent wonder

Returning to the lesson, the seniors were to type a document with double lined spaces
The women created recipes, and the men were to type words or text in rows
There wasn’t the usual chatter; the students seemed to be going through the paces
Everyone seemed to be succumbing to a new level of lows

It wasn’t something that any of us wanted to live through
An attack on our country, by terrorists, weak, pathetic beings pretending to be men
I was sure that the news of the day had affected the students, and more than a few
And after the lesson was over, she called the old man over, and she put down her pen

She asked him what he thought about the news of the day
And if he had watched any of it on the television before class
Saying that she thought it was horrible, being attacked in such a way
He replied with few words:  “This too shall pass”.

And with that, she watched him lower his head again as he walked out of the room
It was evident that she had touched a nerve by asking him his opinion
It seemed he felt an impending sense of doom
She decided the topic was off limits, next time, to these elderly men and women

A week later, she found out that the old man was a World War II Army veteran
From California, his metal of honor was his most prized possession
His wife pulled the teacher aside before the next class began
To tell her he wouldn’t be there; it seemed that after all of the news aired, he needed time to mend

SALUTE TO THE MARINES

http://media2.s-nbcnews.com/j/MSNBC/Components/Photo/_new/100220-afghan-hmed-12p.grid-6x2.jpg

Sing hymns and praises
About the brave men's sacrifices
Loyalty to country and fellow men
Unequivocal to none
They explore the wilderness, sail the rough seas
Endure the extreme weather, pain and loneliness

To serve and protect our freedom
On God's many forsaken shores

Time honored tradition
Happy birthday, Marine!
Entitled the few and the proud who serve

Mantras held dearly within their hearts:
Always faithful (semper fidelis) - their motto
Rifleman's creed, an oath to God and himself
Improvise, adapt and overcome
No marine left behind even when down
Every marine a rifleman, first and foremost
Salute to the Marines—Semper Fi!

knuckle draggin
nose breathing

fucking fireman fenian
wanna be fisher man

until
compact fractures
internal bleeding
only unresponsive blood transfusions
from some AA
official
loser's contusions
all over
purple copper potpourri

redbeard deadlifted that concrete
while another patty pulled rebar
and jimmy done dragged shorty to safety
2 other ol boys wore
