THANKSGIVING

Cold Turkey

Two years to the day
something clicked inside
and I bade farewell
to the last of the crutches
that I'd been leaning on

"Life is for the living"
anyone with an opinion would say
as if them words alone
could block out
the craving for numbness
or desire for death
in the absence of sleep

There's no words
to describe that hell
but the feeling
has never truly gone away
and I'm thankful for that mercy
because without the reminder
during any one of these last four weeks  
I'd have gone back to hell
in a heartbeat
and built a fine house
out of dreams

Life, is for the living
sometimes the light might be dim
but it's not really about
how bright the light is
more how empty the darkness will be
so I thank hell for the reprieve  
even though I know deep down
it wants me back
