The End

Though our days in this comp are numbered
We will never forget what we faced
While our imagination may return to break for slumber
We will cross the finish line of this not race

To all the poets who participate I must definitely tip my hat
For all the inspiring writes and discussion so sweet
Well no amount of gold or treasure could ever replace that
Thank you kindly for the adventure, til we next time meet

The fountain of inspiration does await
We’ve made it this far, we stand at the gates
Congratulations to one and all
Stand up proud and stand up tall

witching hour

it’s a morning tangle
unfinished thoughts & half formed plans
without these moments they never seem to evolve
so I rise while it’s quiet
before household & neighbors awake
and with a cat curled on my back
my ink scribbles furiously across the page
no sense trying to direct it
when chaos is the sound of the moment
who am I to argue
when I haven’t even the sense to turn on a light
sitting here in darkness
trying to write

even the birds think I’m crazy
being up this early
for the worms are all safe just now
needn’t seek shelter for at least another hour
but the glow of my phone is my illumination
such as it were
attempting to capture concepts from random words
and who knows if I’ll be able to read it later
when daylight finally arrives
I’ll drag my ass to a computer
fill a mug with what my colleagues call coffee
though I have to drown it in creamer
and a bit of sugar
just to choke it down & keep it there

use the keyhole of my mind
and take a quick peek inside
(if you dare)
but I really wouldn’t advise it
it’s a mess in my head
as dawn creeps cautiously over the sill
the world stirs & silence ends
whatever you now read
was what dripped from the tip of my pen
and so ends my witching hour

(I freaking made it!!)

NaPoWriMo 2019  -  April 30th  -  No:30 of 30

FREE 30-DAY NAPO TRIAL

The authorities wish to inform
your 30-day trial’s now over
let life be returned to a norm -
sleep sound and drink tea and recover

The nightmares will slowly recede
as ‘fifty’ becomes just a number
no longer invoking a scream
when waking in midst of your slumber

And as for that stressed word ‘unique’
with word-counts that trouble on-line
it sits next to ‘unisex’ — peak
in the dictionary — everything’s fine

Please note that the 30-day trial
required lots of sweat by a team
who ran it with ever a smile,
enabling all of our dreams

The rest of the year lies before you -
post short or as long as you please
to gather more fans who adore you
unpressured, and writing with ease

God speed in your calm convalescence
and here is our sure guarantee
by March you’ll regain enough presence
to sign up in twenty-twentee.

Catena Rondo: How Dim These Lights Might Seem: Day Thirty

How dim these lights might seem in evening sun
But still they flare, their flame to call us back
In dancers’ time that breathless feeds our lack.
How dim these lights might seem in evening sun.

But still they flare, their flame to call us back,
These words that endless run from day to day
That perfect find their time but will not stay,
But still they flare, their flame to call us back.

These words that endless run from day to day,
That stand when all have left us here alone,
In greying light and dying day like stone,
These words that endless run from day to day.

That stand when all have left us here alone,
How may I bow and speak in hungry praise,
With mouth to hungry mouth in cunning phrase’
That stand when all have left us here alone?

How may I bow and speak in hungry praise,
With verses glazed in shear exalt dispersed,
And at our end not single word reversed,
How may I bow and speak in hungry praise!

With verses glazed in shear exalt dispersed,
How dim these lights might seem in evening sun,
Now giving all since we these days begun,
With verses glazed in shear exalt dispersed.

How dim these lights might seem in evening sun
But still they flare, their flame to call us back
In dancers’ time that breathless feeds our lack.
How dim these lights might seem in evening sun.

To The Ones I Love(d)

"To you, and you, and you(mmm), and even crazy you"

my heart thanks you
as do my wounds

I was bound and gagged
bleeding from within

how do I even begin
birthing these words
not even YOU have ever heard

the sunrise captured your eyes
and I melted along
with that chocolate surprise
I was saving for that first night
or was it the day

you didn't care, but for real you did
a mirage of affluence
stored in simplicity
I let you take a turn
our sun refused to burn

but I did
at the stake
and the ashes
spread out among the willows

and the wind
she kissed the earth
begging, there was rebirth

the roses blossomed from the bush
or was it a tree
glamoring right in front of me
I kissed her bud
and she opened up
for more than a world to see

symphonies played on my horizon
love notes felt of harmony
of peace, serenity
the hue of success

not in riches or in wealth
but in life and thus we are dealt
to overcome
misdeeds, misfortunes

my pennies are scarce
but my cup it overflows
with joy, happiness
memories, and gratitude

I'm an addict
to feelings, to love
to you

there's more than gold to be had
—if you just brush back the glitter

Come Stroll The Moonlight
( before we fly home )

Come, attend us,
dear sisters & daughters!

Come stroll the moonlight
along tide waters!

Let’s gaily walk the
promenade beaches

Of the tide-swept
shorelines’ coastal reaches.

How they shine with
Luna’s opal blessings!

We’re lovely in our
scarves of evening mist,

Swept up off our necks
like black swans adrift.

And seashell bangles,
dangling, play a tune

That sound like bubbles
surfacing to swoon...

Aaaaahhhh

Just a reminder that although the forum reports the comp has ended - it will not officially close until midnight PST USA tonight.  We opted not to extend the deadline a week so that trophies could be awarded tomorrow.

No entries will be accepted after the comp officially closes.  No exceptions.

Worm Work

I wake up early in the morning
but after the birds have started twittering;
I don't wake up that early
as that is unhealthy
- the early bird gets the worm,
I have a quick breakfast
of some sustenance
and mug of mud to wash it down
then suit up so I am well suited for my job,
before I leave my little piece of land I call home
to join in the everyday rat race
where I take the underground
to then go about my work
just like everyone else around me;
to even the eagle eyed
I am just another worm and lowlife
hardly of any note or notice
wriggling along an inexorable timeline.
I work in a small space
doing more or less the same thing each and every day
slowly boring my way through my workload
just another one going about their business,
I usually have lunch alone
the solitary peace a nice change of pace
before its back to munching away at my tasks
labouring away at the production in its line
in my official space
ever onwards and forwards,
the constant boring through similar assignments
ploughing through the projects
endeavouring in progressive excavation,
until the work day finishes
and it is back through the underground
back to my humble home
to have some short time of relaxation
before I go to sleep
and the cycle starts all over again tomorrow.

Retrospect

The competition is over
the laborious marathon ended
and yet,
I do not feel satisfied:
thirty days worth
but only lengthy pieces to show for it
imperfect ramblings
masquerading as 'poetry' and 'poems'
these hideous verses
all the worse for wear
having reached arbitrary assigned numbers
with about as much art as an artichoke.
Then someone said some very wise words:
"It's to show you that you can write regardless",
this means I have a body of month's work
with which to resculpt and redefine as wanted,
but more than that
I have created and conceived
so that I made for a month
breaking the back of writer's block
to do something, an experiment,
that is groundwork for the future
that through their faults and failures
gives insight in how to improve;
for next time will be different  if not better.

DEFERENCE

“Don’t forget I love you” was your message;
Of script in parents’ rings it did remind.
Remember me - written there in cursive;
Knowing it sometimes lost, they’d need to find.
I’d like to think I can’t forget to eat;
To know that I won’t blank out on breathing.
But sometimes when I’m flying by the seat,
Vital functions may need a debriefing
And there you are to hold up your sign bright,
And point and gesture for your audience
Of one: this creature blessed with holy flight
Must bow its humble head in deference.

dominant chord

I'm in between piano keys,
pent up here, practicing -
today, my voice is velveteen
my sound soars as it should.

The test will be
just focusing,
and sending my vibrations
off that stage to judges' ears
for picking-apart and grading.

I sing - but in between my notes,
some kind of evil steam -
innocence's antidote,
dear, thoughts of thee,
and thoughts of thee...

I'm turned on like the light in here
and missing you by mouth;
I ache like this piano
to exemplify my power - yes,

I'd freshly forgotten the taste
of power in my mouth -
Sunday it was on your tongue
freely dripping down.

Final Ceremony

Beaten rivers always flow
Tears have clothed the waterbed
You were here not long ago
Not long enough to be dead

Gazing into blackened pools
I whisper as I reflect
Are you trapped behind the glass?
Are you where my tears collect?

Humbling past opens my mind
Revisit my aching soul
Cannot stop the waterfall
Death’s rivers I can’t control

Final ceremony
I know you will come again
You are a kaleidoscope
When will you come again

my horse

don't seem to fucking like me
on his back much.
turns his skinny neck around
and bites my goddamn thigh
anytime I kick -
gets pissed at me
for clinging to his mane -
what the hell, buddy,
what would you have me do -
ain't no reins -

I suppose it's just a wild thing.
Can't help but love it
for that.

So now in the dirt, choking on
a hoof-printed cloud
I simmer
in frustration.
Feel that bruise.
There is nothing left to do.
Take my pain, yessir,

then lasso that boy,
hop up on him,
and ride a little better.

Done

And here we are:
The end of this thoughtword
experiment
swollen with second-guessing word plucking
and love and heartache.

I am the low hanging,
over-ripe apple ready to
fall.
If I’m not eaten soon,
I’ll be past
expiration
and no good
to anyone.

At least that’s how
it feels.

Or maybe I’m
dried, cracked earth.
Begging the heavens
for a single drop of
relief.

Whatever I am,
I can say, at least:
it is finished.

Brave New World

Here’s to the dreamers and the mouth of babes,
Who will surely one day inherit the earth,
May our sorrow today be their hope tomorrow,
Giving way to enlightenment and rebirth.

Here’s to those who in our current times,
Are fighting, striving and pushing for change,
So that it brings a better place for our offspring,
Offering peace to our spirits in exchange.

Here’s to the philosophers and the thinkers,
To the teacher who helps shape a young mind,
They’ll pay homage for passing down knowledge,
With the commitment that it will be shared in kind.

Here’s to those who are caring for the sick,
Looking for a cure and to help them heal,
And to those who volunteer their time,
Who feed the hungry one more meal.

Here’s to the farmers and workers in the fields,
Here’s to stargazers looking up at the night sky,
Here’s to star-crossed lovers longing for the day,
May their dreams come closer when they sigh.

If education is to be the fundamental goal,
Maybe then our true potential can be achieved,
With love, sympathy and understanding,
The wisdom of the ages will be received.

It won’t be an easy road and it’s not perfect,
But with faith and patience it can be unfurled,
Maybe then our children will be free and happy,
Here’s to you: Dreamers of a Brave New World.
