I’m not sure who you’re asking to provide the list or who will choose one of their favourites.

DU members are welcome to take part in the preservation project by nominating a list of their favourite poets and poems. We probably need a new thread to make that happen… I’ll add that to the to do list.

If you’re a creator and you don’t know where to start, I suggest you focus on the active poets you see online in the lobby, forums or the submissions page. From there you can make the most of the DU tools on offer. You can view a poet’s entire catelogie as a list and focus on poems with the most likes and reading list adds, or you can go down the rabbit hole of reviewing a DU poet’s favourite poems on their Reading List.

I hope that helps. I’ll be providing more support and guidance to curators on the weekend.

As discussions have continued on DU’s closure, I want to take a moment to acknowledge the necessary discussion surrounding copyright and why preserving digital poetry matters.

Copyright laws exist for a reason, and I fully respect them. At the same time, there’s an important conversation to be had about the preservation of digital literature, an area that is only now gaining recognition. DUP has been part of the shift from traditional publication toward online creative communities, where poets from all over the world share, learn, and grow together. DU is a perfect example of the kind of literary magic that happens when diverse voices connect in a space that fosters raw creativity.

For many poets, DU has been more than just a website… it has been a space for inspiration, mentorship, and unfiltered artistic expression. The intensity of writing, shaped by immediate feedback, encouragement, debate, heartbreak, and creative challenges, has arguably done more for a writer’s development than formal education… [maybe the sex and drugs are better at university], but when it comes to creative growth, nothing compares to the raw experience of writing within a community that lives and breathes poetry. The exchange of ideas in a space like DU fosters a kind of artistic evolution that traditional publishing rarely allows.

We all know many members have come and gone in recent years, but DU’s influence runs deep. Some of its most impactful poets and voices may not even be aware of the site’s impending closure. If we don’t take steps to preserve their contributions, their work could disappear along with the site itself. While the anthology will capture some of DU’s essence, we should also consider working with digital literature preservation experts to ensure that these works are not lost entirely.

DU has given so much to so many, and I believe we have an opportunity to give back, by making sure that its poetry and legacy are not forgotten.

As we work to preserve DU’s literary legacy, we want to focus on the poets who have shaped this community. If there are DU poets who have influenced you, please nominate them so we can prioritise curating their work.

To chime in on your discussion with Rob, Case: I am allowing all NaPo team members ( present and past ) as well as participants who wish to be a part of the anthology to submit their favorite NaPo poem with the required permission to use clause. Imho, this saves the curator, in this instance, me, time.

If we ask participants to submit their favorite poems from another poet, then I suggest they obtain the permission as well. Or we could end up endlessly pursuing permission from each submission only to be told by a percentage that they'd rather another poem be featured.

Just trying to streamline from experience.

That is kind of my thinking A. To ease the burden on the curators.

If a member nominates Poet X. Y or Z, tries to contact them and ask which of their writes they wish to appear in the anthology (if at all).

Ha. Let me loose on the Roman Catholics! Only kidding. Was actually christened as a Methodist, but that's an ecclesiastical concern for another website.

There are literally thousands upon thousands of poems, and sadly, some of the magnificent poetry will lay dormant and dead.

Episcopalian here! And, yes, unfortunately I'm only contacting those that are currently active and a few I still have emails for. There's nothing else we can do except get the word out and hopefully they'll come trickling in.

Oh yeah?! Well, a Methodist sounds like a meth-addicted dentist!
Okay we need to stop wasting space in this thread!

lolol

Clarification: I asked somewhere in these pages about the memorial requirements. I know an obituary is required; however, are we looking to publish just a memorial paragraph? Or a memorial paragraph and poem?

Thanks for all your hard work, Case. It's appreciated.

I think memorial paragraph accompanied with one of their poems... adding a poem from the poet after the memorial feels appropriate... let them have the last say.

I'm keen to hear the thoughts of those who have volunteered to write the memorial.

Well, that would be me. I have Dan's and Eerie's complete ( bio and poem ). I also have LadyFancy's obituary; however, she disabled her account and there are no poems. Not sure if her family ever knew there was but will be happy to contact them if we're doing poetry.

Rob has written something about her, a memorial and a poem, so if we can't find one from her family we can use his ( I am assuming ). He gave me permission.

LunaGreyhawk is helping me try and locate John Feddeler's obituary. Rob told me LadyFancy found it in 2023, but he doesn't remember the link or any details. I am going back over my war poetry because I know I remember him saying something about serving in Vietnam, which would pinpoint his age for us. If we find it I'll reach out to his family regarding a poem from his catalogue.

I also can't find one for David Macleod ( though I have requested one ) or Jade Pandora.

Grace has written Gabes bio and selected a poem.

I have left notes on the spreadsheet for each incomplete memorial.
