Journey to the Stars
There are no more holes
to bury secrets.
Standing in the chasm between
body and spirit, I am unbroken.
Taking back my time, my being,
my every last piece that once was dismantled,
walking into a new life
here, or into another dimension
replete with love:
this is the measure of life.
Emerging in starlight as
dust to earth
heat to fire
breath to air
weightless to water.
My journey to the stars
may be long…
But it is healing.
to bury secrets.
Standing in the chasm between
body and spirit, I am unbroken.
Taking back my time, my being,
my every last piece that once was dismantled,
walking into a new life
here, or into another dimension
replete with love:
this is the measure of life.
Emerging in starlight as
dust to earth
heat to fire
breath to air
weightless to water.
My journey to the stars
may be long…
But it is healing.

As mentioned in the initial post, this year's NaPo is dedicated in Memoriam to Eerie, Director Emeritus. Despite her valiant fight, we lost her after a 5-year battle with metastatic breast cancer on November 15, 2024
Eerie ( as she liked to be known here ) was also a proud graduate of Sinclair College, where she earned her degree with honors, and Edison State College. She found joy in gardening, writing poetry and spending time outdoors, where she loved to bike and hike. Known for her giving spirit, Elisha often shared homemade gifts, which brought warmth and joy to many.
Eerie was a phenomenal DU member who freely encouraged and supported others. She was a dynamic part of the annual challenge whose legacy in fostering poets has left its mark.
Her poetry touched on the human psyche and was often raw and honest in nature. One of the last poems she wrote was "Journey to the Stars", a reference to the last leg of her physical journey here on earth.
Thus, the inspiration for this year's NaPoWriMo Theme.
She was so excited about returning to the team after a year off, and we had planned some amazing things that I am finding difficult to implement without her.
One of the last things she said to me via email was:
I have three more months of flights back and forth for treatments. Otherwise things seem to be going well. Some noticeable changes that seem positive, so that’s good. I’ll know more in November about how the treatment worked for me. Fingers crossed I beat it.
Unfortunately, November didn't hold the news we'd all hoped for. . .so we are gathering on the NaPo Launch Pad to honor her poetry, memory, contributions, and ever-present spirit wafting through the halls of Deep Underground Poetry.
Thank you to all who are joining us for this Journey to the Stars.

I still can't believe that she's gone. I was looking forward to working with her on the team again this year. Although I can't claim to have known her well, she was genuine and kind, and I liked her a lot. We were also born within a few months of each other, and both had kids. Her death is so very unfair, and I guess I have a touch of survivor's guilt.
