Morning Mantra

Creator, be my wine.
Be my bread.
Be the warmth in
my morning coffee.
Be the swirling
memories of love
given and received
without guilt or shame.

Before I Say Anything

Before I say anything
I must think about the consequence of my words
The weight they carry can tear apart or heal or have no affect on the heart
But I feel like I have to be the better person and express myself eloquently

Before I say anything
I usually calculate and try to imagine what the future will hold
Yesterday doesn’t predict tomorrow but I’ve caused some sorrow
And so I must hold myself to a higher standard going forth

Before I say anything
I must be able to understand and sympathize
And though eyes may judge me for who and what I’ve been in the past
I learned to forgive myself and move forward with a better sense of direction

Before I say anything
Know that I too feel the frustrations and vexations
I don’t have any control of the world or the people around me
Only my actions
With peace of mind
Impassive while gathering and organizing my thoughts

Before I say anything
Please understand that I am a flawed man still working on myself
The hammer I hold now helps build a new foundation over the old
Because the words I speak seek the purpose I’ve been looking for
