The lady with the two little white dogs

I see her almost every night
just before 1am.
She looks like a million dollars
If a million dollars weren't lined
with greed, selfishness, corruption,
and slavery.
If a million dollars were just peace,
wise choices,
and self preservation.
The result of good, honest hard work.

I wonder who she is.
If she's lovable.
If there is a man at home
who lets her walk their dogs
at this hour.
If I were him I would be hand in hand with her.
Looking down at our little white canine children
and smiling.

Is it like a dead species pushed under our feet

We should keep keep on laughing.
In the woods
the shadows of the leaves of the trees
play an odd lip synch over her forehead.

It is too far to get anywhere before night.
That is something I would think
and that there are dreams
she could finish before me.

Is it like a dead species pushed under our feet.
We walk through the sound of a chainsaw - things must be constantly
growing up here. If her voice was cut away I would have woods
and woods to tell.

One day,
we lay on the beach.

I want to laugh it all into the water.

Broken mirrors are beautiful in their own poetic way

That familiar mix of booze and starlight
mixing bittersweet in the cool night air,
and here I am to celebrate—

with my offering of powdered dreams,
crushed under the groaning weight
of latticed, structured plans
and forced to play bedrock
to a groundwork grid of years.
A sigh to the breeze to send it up.

Wandering through the old sacrificial altars,
those cracked streets
worn a thousand times by my threadbare tread
and somehow I'm hoofing it again.
Close your eyes, lift your chin to the breeze
and breathe it in. Soft, deep, let it wash you.

Don't worry—for the first time all day
the world can mug your body
but not your thoughts.
It's the usual prayer, to feel alive;
you can't ask for more
and you want nothing less.

Well, fuck—
I've meandered through this ritual so often,
the taste of my dreams gets mixed up nowadays
with the taste of stale beer.

When I was about 12

I once asked my mum
why people wear black
and the universe
showed me.

Left to Languish/Lonely, But You’re not Alone, I Too Have

screamed at God            been careless with the truth
                     set my families house afire
 hidden in plain sight
                         harvested plagues/
                                                    poison/

                  bloodied fists in my chest

carried shame like a baby               loved like the locust
wanted to crawl through my skin
                                 been broken like a colt
                                 like a promise
like a bone in a vice
washed my hands in burning sugar cane
and my mouth out with rotted pine cones
kept suspicion on all men   and   my back to the wall

blistered my tongue on curses and spells
hid scars beneath lovers and pills
been helpless as a hatched heron
                    etched revenge into my sky
had a man leave my trust hanging in the gallows
                                   shoed the devil’s cleft foot
searched for death on my own dime
drew blood from family and lovers
felt everything when I wanted to feel nothing
