Blessed be the Fruit
(Parallels of Fictional Tales and Real-World Spells)
There are these men who claim to have more
knowledge over women’s bodies. They issue laws
to have more control over them under the guise of
morality or God and all that that is pure, and so a
plan is formed, but it’s more of an ominous map
that seems to head toward this fictional dystopia
*
Quoting scriptures, they look to these ancient laws,
to a time when women were stoned to death if
they were caught in the act of fornication or some
other decree that defied the male authority.
*
But now, the hypocrisy is obvious, shameless, and blatant
as it seems they have more skeletons in their closets
then there are bodies disposed of in ditches and
graves. It’s an indoctrination when the extreme buys
into the idea and so they spew a rhetoric blanketed
in beliefs they deem to be…divine.
*
We see it throughout history, throughout cultures all
around the planet, even more so today with the aid
of technology. How many lives were threatened when
they spoke up? The Malala’s, the Parks, the Franks,
the women who challenged the norms because they
had more to contribute…the Curies, the Nightingales,
the Kellers. How many times were they met with
indifference and resistance.
*
I ask myself, what about those who had the chance
to speak up and didn’t? Those who subjugated because
they were too afraid or simply didn’t see the truth for
what it was. Perhaps it was the propaganda machine
that twisted their view of reality, that it was better
to conform than be different from the norm in order
to be able to fit in.
*
But it seems some have bought into the ideology with
all their heart and mind, without regard for science
or facts. They’ve gotten so deep into it, they’re willing
to sacrifice their lives. They’re willing to support the
men who oppress women simply because their lives
and views are somehow better than those who have
less.
*
But I guess, life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness
doesn’t really apply if you don’t have the resources
or wealth to do as you please. It seems like many have
fallen under a spell to sell their individuality for the sake
of preservation and status. It’s as if in tying the knot
with the hangman, they carry the noose. It’s as if marrying
the executioner, they get to hold the axe.

Recycled
each drop of time
drips slowly
between the cracks
of reality
waiting for...
birth
life
death
love
hate
everything recycled
forged into form
atoms re-assembled
deconstructed
in the emptiness
from the One
each drop of time
slowly dripping
and
here we are
waiting...

It Makes Me Cry
The music in my soul
That accompanies my poems
Forever silent beyond the cage surrounding me
My physical form is a prisn of silent bars
That shutter the keys on my piano
and nothing I do will let the song of me sing out
The sadness is unbearable sometimes
It makes me cry that they sing to no one
and when I am forgotten
my poetry will tell nothing of who I was
My books standing quietly on a bookshelf
Unopened to the eyes of lovers of verse
I am nothing, a shadow of a man
I am a dream for ghosts to echo in laughter
It crushes my hopeful heart that I wil be gone
and everything I did will turn to dust
Forcing my spirit to ask what it was all for
So much love wishing to have been felt
So many dreams evaporating into nightmares
I sometimes wish I had never lived to feel this way
If only I never knew such pain and loneliness
To everyone else it would not even be a ripple
Off the tips of a butterflie's wings
Sometimes
It makes me cry
That accompanies my poems
Forever silent beyond the cage surrounding me
My physical form is a prisn of silent bars
That shutter the keys on my piano

Poor Little Posey
I stopped to look at some flowers today.
A simple act, to be certain.
I bent down,
with great trepidation of not getting back up,
to smell their scent.
The fragrances were heady and aromatic. Refreshing and pure.
The feel of the petals were luscious and smooth, soft and comforting.
I found myself comparing them to my favorite velvet blanket. The one I use only for decoration.
The same variety of flower in the next bed had been overwatered causing them to wilt and droop over.
They appeared lifeless and spent. Yet the color and perfume, while still prevalent, didn’t provide the same allure and I semi-quickly pivoted to another bed of more vibrant posies.
So many lovely varietals and hybrids I’d never before seen. Bursting in bloom and beauty.
Cautiously rising, I turned back to the wilted flowers, as it occurred to me they looked as I felt.
Bedraggled and passed-by.

Deferring the Hangover
There is no hangover when you stay under,
shrink from the savagery above the water,
If you must break the surface, be the crocodile,
with an eye and a blink and not a ripple.
Stay down and drink, country can crash,
carouse and clink, love the girl summoning with lash,
pick fights or arm-wrestle, or stay beer taciturn,
and you can listen and watch the world burn.
Stay down and you will not hear the guns plinking,
they do not pause when you come up for painkillers,
bullets tick bodies off like check marks, they jerk
as they are checked in the battlefield of backstreets.
Come up for air, come up for the hangover
only when good winds whisper above the surface,
when the hearts have eyes, when there is better
in the houses of government and across the river.

THAT RING
I am glad that ring
No longer gets in the way
When I'm touching you
No longer gets in the way
When I'm touching you

Rewind
When the curtain closes
And the applause fades
When you pack up your make-up
Then go home with your suitcase
You start tearing up
Because it's done
You won't return to the stage
For who knows how long
You have memories
Maybe even a recording
You can see your smile
But it's not the same thing
It's the high of love
Of actually feeling alive
Of not thinking for once
Finally no need to survive
Just fully giving in
And letting your voice sore
So powerful and free
You want nothing more
I want nothing more
I just replay it in my mind
Waiting for the next one
For the next perfect night
