Poetry Contest

Write a poem that includes the last text message that you sent.
Sometimes, I think we write poems without even thinking about it. Especially now that we do much of our communicating in the written word. We turn phrases to make someone laugh or to seem clever. We add descriptions to let them see what we are seeing. We state facts with little elaboration because we're in a mood.

So, go to your text/private messages and find the last one you sent. Write a poem that includes a direct quote from that message.

An example:

Recipe

No swimming tonight.
Thunderstorms have moved in –
and we need to figure out something to eat.

There are ingredients to make
a million different dishes,
but shall we settle for
peanut butter sandwiches and our favorite blanket
with a view of the darkness
creeping across the sky?

*

My text was:
No swimming tonight. Thunderstorms have moved in. And we need to figure out something to eat.

Let's see the poems you've started without even knowing you've started them!

The Rules:

1. Write a poem that includes the last text/private message that you've sent. The message does not have to start the poem. It just has to be included. In the author's note of your poem, include the text message. You can change/delete private info (names, addresses, etc) if you'd like.
2. No more than twenty lines. Line breaks do not count. The title does not count.
3. No extreme erotica/content. I don't want an 18+ warning label slapped on this.
4. Two entries per account.
5. Collaboration is allowed if the recipient of the text/message is willing to write with you.
6. Two weeks.

Questions? Ask them here.

My latest message was a
Stitch in time
Time lost, time found
It wasn't mine
Like a bird
Falling down
Nothin new
Nothing old
Neither hot nor cold
Reality bites
Turns to rust
All the same
It's just us
Along a path...
I said...."I need to get home'.
Someone waiting
On the phone.
Never real til you're there
Falling calling
Time to share.

My last text message was “I might have to. I’m so damp and cold. All my clothing is saturated” in response to my Husband asking if I was showering before eating on my way back from a walk in the woods that turned stormy.

Thanks for the entries, you lovely people! Just a reminder to read the rules.

Make sure you have the text message you used in your author’s note. Also make sure you’re keeping it to twenty lines or less! Thanks!

Competition: "Poet and I didn't know it"

Please don’t disturb me.
My bed warm and cozy.
Tossing and turning,
Trying to get some sleep.
My pillows on one big heap.

Hiding my face under the covers,
The light creating all kinds of colors.
My bed sheets thick and comfortable.
Muffling the sounds outside my room,
Trying to block the impending doom.

“Will you come out to play?!”
A voice I didn’t want to hear today.
“Get out of bed you lazy swine!”
I don't want to; I just pressed snooze.
I want to sleep through this day of blues.

The Struggle is Real Sometimes, Brother

Or so it's what I choose to believe,
clearing all those hurdles of contrast
nonchalantly blocking our way.

Go around! Rise above! Dig under!
some would say; in all honesty. . .
I've ignorantly advised the same.

But, there are times mountain heights
are too much for fledgling wings—
not to mention bordering ravines,

their eager throats swallowing missteps;
and, don't discount the solid-rock base
bending the sharpest shovel's blade.

No, not all advice is sound nor sage;
'maybe it's best you just sit in place
until a path opens itself willingly'
.

We may not be able to reason the delay;
however, it could be that the Universe
saved our life, or blocked a ghastly mistake.

It's what I choose to believe anyway.
