Get Your Emily On
Poetry Contest Description
Writing a poem in the style of Emily Dickinson
My poetry professor had us do what she called apprentice poems ... writing poems in the style of a poet or poetess that we liked ... this meant paying attention to the style ... the use of rhyme (if any) ... the number of stanzas ... etc. But it is not just simple parroting ... we had to strive to have some of our own originality in the writing
So get your Emily on ... try writing a poem in the style of Emily Dickinson ... by submitting one poem ... newly written ...
If you don't have access to Emily Dickinson poetry you can visit www.poetryfoundation.org and search there for many of her poems ...
Here is one of my favorite of her poems:
I dwell in Possibility -
I dwell in Possibility -
A fairer House than Prose -
More numerous of Windows -
Superior - for Doors -
Of Chambers as the Cedars -
Impregnable of eye -
And for an everlasting Roof
The Gambrels of the Sky -
Of Visitors - the fairest -
For Occupation - This -
The spreading wide my narrow Hands
To gather Paradise -

When the Silent Crow has Flown
I dance with him, a stranger still—
A figment of my mind
The song a hymn of meager skill—
Composed of words in rhyme
He takes the lead yet I resist—
I know this dance by heart
The words he needs cannot exist
While ink and parchment part
We dance a while
And rest a while
I struggle—What to Say?
The cat has come
And got my tongue
Perhaps another day
The dance goes on and he grows strong—
My ardor gives him strength
Each liaison gives girth and brawn—
His wit, more class and depth
When the silent crow has flown
Then I’m no longer lonesome
Because my lad has finally grown—
And he's such a handsome poem!
A figment of my mind
The song a hymn of meager skill—
Composed of words in rhyme
He takes the lead yet I resist—
I know this dance by heart
The words he needs cannot exist
While ink and parchment part

Because my lad has finally grown—
And he's such a handsome poem!

Forever I Roam
I was eighteen and I left home
ambitious or rather, all roads will lead to Rome,
only if I worked my ass off right to the bone
Life’s always serene and fair
I start off as a stage actor with a flair
Having my strings pulled, there’s never despair
through peaks and troughs, I journey through the valleys
throughout the days and night, the smell of fresh air, had my soul in harmony
sunshines from the East, love greets me with a subtle ease
from dawn to dusk, the lessons I learnt from the West were the best
as I moved from one continent to another, I embrace everything that were better
Bitter ales Courage Best, greasy French fries with gravy and cheese
Never mind the rolling hills of Cotwolds,
or the fresh streams flowing down the Thames,
the illusion was always the beauty of whatever was greener on the other side of St James!
Then came the land, way above the 49th parallel,
snowed capped and barren that’s unlike hell
Yet it the heat came from the hut, sat over the frozen ice,
grilling the fleshy rainbow trout and pepper bells
then comes July, the summer takes over the long arduous winter
I see everything that has become greener, brighter and my heart a little lighter
three decades past and comes the time,
I needed to circle back home,
gone were the illusions of everything’s greener,
except my desire to forever roam!

Recluce
Tribute to Emily Dickinson, not to be considered an entry
Beautiful recluse
How dare you
Hide your beauty
From my eyes?
Teasing me through
Drape drawn windows
And locked doors
With verbs of love
And adverbs of passion
Wycliffe broke your heart
But he could not smother
Your burning desire
Let another lover in
End this dark mourning
By burning your body
With fornication scorching
Wild nights are not
Our luxury
They are a necessity
And all you need do
Is open your door
Wide for me and approve
Beautiful recluse
How dare you
Hide your beauty
From my eyes?
Teasing me through
Drape drawn windows
And locked doors
With verbs of love
And adverbs of passion
Wycliffe broke your heart
But he could not smother
Your burning desire
Let another lover in
End this dark mourning
By burning your body
With fornication scorching
Wild nights are not
Our luxury
They are a necessity
And all you need do
Is open your door
Wide for me and approve

As I Grow Old with Grays
The times are changing
As I grow old with grays
I’m busy rearranging
Closer to my last days –
The years go by faster
As I move a little slow
Not yet out to pasture
But I hear the wind blow –
The words escape me
As I write the truth
For all that shaped me
Withered away in youth –
I count every wrinkle
Claiming each as mine
But also see a twinkle
In the life I still define –
Then I begin to smile
I still have time
It might be a while
It may be my prime –
Nothing is guaranteed
Nothing really stays
Except maybe the verse I leave
As I grow old with grays –
And maybe with some grace

No need to jump the queue
Thinning hairs lost youth
times grey, sent to displease
clouded insights focus blighted
a stature so reduced
The echo's of the graveyard
half forgotten past
shadows cast so uninvited
the last Swallow that dives
Walk a black horizon
no need to jump the queue
the ledger exclamation just a hyphen
phoenix spirit just candle lit
times grey, sent to displease
clouded insights focus blighted
a stature so reduced
The echo's of the graveyard
half forgotten past
shadows cast so uninvited
the last Swallow that dives
Walk a black horizon
no need to jump the queue
the ledger exclamation just a hyphen
phoenix spirit just candle lit

DROUGHT
when i thought poetry
finally died
it coughed a bit
and then just sighed
and then i saw
its spirit rise
like vapor
in this heated lull
to hang in droplets
on the skull
those bones as gray
and thick as cloud
and lightening, bright
and thunder, loud
and then its words
upon my pain
medicinal
as summer rain
finally died
it coughed a bit
and then just sighed
and then i saw
its spirit rise
like vapor
in this heated lull
to hang in droplets
on the skull
those bones as gray
and thick as cloud
and lightening, bright
and thunder, loud
and then its words
upon my pain
medicinal
as summer rain
