Chloroquine phosphate, an old-fashioned anti-malarial drug, has shown strong results against COVID-19 infections in South Korea and China.

A study by James M Todaro and Gregory J Rigano, in association with Stanford University School of Medicine and National Academy of Sciences Researchers.

According to the summary:

Recent guidelines from South Korea and China report that chloroquine is an effective antiviral therapeutic treatment against Coronavirus Disease 2019.  Use of chloroquine (tablets) is showing favorable outcomes in humans infected with Coronavirus including faster time to recovery and shorter hospital stay.  US CDC research shows that chloroquine also has strong potential as a prophylactic (preventative) measure against coronavirus in the lab, while we wait for a vaccine to be developed.  Chloroquine is an inexpensive, globally available drug that has been in widespread human use since 1945 against malaria, autoimmune and various other conditions.

It concludes:

Chloroquine can both prevent and treat malaria.  Chloroquine can both prevent and treat coronavirus in primate cells (Figure 1 and Figure 2).  According to South Korean and China human treatment guidelines, chloroquine is effective in treating COVID-19.  Given chloroquine’s human safety profile and existence, it can be implemented today in the U.S., Europe and the rest of the world.  Medical doctors may be reluctant to prescribe chloroquine to treat COVID-19 since it is not FDA approved for this use.  The United States of America and other countries should immediately authorize and indemnify medical doctors for prescribing chloroquine to treat COVID-19.  We must explore whether chloroquine can safely serve as a preventative measure prior to infection of COVID-19 to stop further spread of this highly contagious virus.

Here is the second study by Jianjun Gao, Zhenxue Tian, Xu Yang

Abstract:

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) virus is spreading rapidly, and scientists are endeavoring to discover drugs for its efficacious treatment in China. Chloroquine phosphate, an old drug for treatment of malaria, is shown to have apparent efficacy and acceptable safety against COVID-19 associated pneumonia in multicenter clinical trials conducted in China. The drug is recommended to be included in the next version of the Guidelines for the Prevention, Diagnosis, and Treatment of Pneumonia Caused by COVID-19 issued by the National Health Commission of the People’s Republic of China for treatment of COVID-19 infection in larger populations in the future.

Here is the third, in the journal Nature. It’s titled ‘Remdesivir and chloroquine effectively inhibit the recently emerged novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) in vitro’

Extract:

Chloroquine, a widely-used anti-malarial and autoimmune disease drug, has recently been reported as a potential broad-spectrum antiviral drug.8,9 Chloroquine is known to block virus infection by increasing endosomal pH required for virus/cell fusion, as well as interfering with the glycosylation of cellular receptors of SARS-CoV.10Our time-of-addition assay demonstrated that chloroquine functioned at both entry, and at post-entry stages of the 2019-nCoV infection in Vero E6 cells (Fig. 1c, d). Besides its antiviral activity, chloroquine has an immune-modulating activity, which may synergistically enhance its antiviral effect in vivo. Chloroquine is widely distributed in the whole body, including lung, after oral administration. The EC90 value of chloroquine against the 2019-nCoV in Vero E6 cells was 6.90 μM, which can be clinically achievable as demonstrated in the plasma of rheumatoid arthritis patients who received 500 mg administration.11Chloroquine is a cheap and a safe drug that has been used for more than 70 years and, therefore, it is potentially clinically applicable against the 2019-nCoV.

What does this mean?

Essentially it means the end of the nightmare is – or ought to be – much closer than we think.

It will take many, many months before a vaccine is available for COVID-19. In the meantime, this is a very effective stop-gap solution. Not only does it make those critically affected by the virus less likely to die; but it also acts as a prophylactic – that is, it is capable of stopping people from getting the disease in the first place.

The reason that Chloroquine works, I understand from an expert in viral pandemics, is that enables the body to absorb more zinc. Zinc appears to be the most effective agent in disrupting the virus and preventing the ‘cytokine storm’, which is the deadly phase in which the virus tricks the body’s immune system into attacking its own healthy tissue, with often fatal consequences.

It's a worry. elderly parents, pregnant daughter. I worry because people are fuckin idiots. I worry because this country, it's people have never faced this kind of shit: no church, no pubs, no schools

we've a history of turning on each other. some folk are still fighting the civil war from a hundred years ago. I worry because some people think toilet roll is some kind of precious metal. it'd be funny if it wasnt so fuckin stupid

I worry because we're one news conference away from house arrest. the special laws put forward in the past few days were at least 400 pages thick and when it comes to it, and it will

we cant take to the streets

I worry because we're fucked now, and when this is over we're gonna be proper fucked

the end.

34 times as many cases March 8th to March 20th. Only 10 times as many deaths. Yes, 237 deaths matter but there were 22,000 flu deaths last season. Perspective matters too.

I don't understand this method of thinking. I truly don't.  One fucking life matters, much less 237 or 22,000.  One is no less painful for the family than the other!  Downplaying Covid-19 to scared families out there whose loved ones are in critical condition, or worse—have passed away from it is cruel and insensitive, imho.

NO ONE in this thread is sensationalizing this virus. Most are presenting FACTS with LINKS to allow others to read and make their own minds up ( something I have to keep asking you to do ).  So when someone comes in here and seems to be downplaying it by comparing it to the fucking flu. . .HELL to the no.

ONE DEATH MATTERS. Hell, one family lost THREE members—AFTER surviving the fucking flu their entire lives.

This is NEW.  This is SCARY to a lot of people.  What they NEED are FACTS.  Not sensationalism or it's contrast, downplaying.  I would LOVE to see you say what you just said about perspective to someone who has lost a loved one to this virus.

That's like me telling a mother who lost a twin that, well, you know, you have another one, many don't: perspective, right?

Some thoughts on that....crisis is the only time real political and societal change occurs, so keep your eyes and ears open to steer conversations. This is a good primer on things that might happen....lots of positives (maybe)

I'm probably not adding much... but the test numbers going down means something... important.

My problem with even giving Covid-19 air time is the amount of deaths from the disruption caused. If we were not testing... they would get the same lifesaving treatment. But because we are shutting down our way of life, this will scar us forever. Many more lives will be lost than if it just ran its course, I'm afraid.

I didn't quote the numbers because I haven't verified them. I quoted his statement about perspective, and edited my statement.

The first U. S. case was in Washington State. It also is where the death toll is highest. But the University of Washington virology department which is closely tracking Washington state numbers is now seeing the curve there flatten. So overall, US numbers are rising but the first state affected might be seeing a little bit of light at the end of the tunnel.

The testing is not for you. The testing is to allay fears, but also for experts to assess spread, which helps plan the response effort. The spread rate is fairly predictable if you know your starting point.... that is why testing is important.

A similar thing to why countries are calling people back from overseas. It’s not for that person. It’s so that the country doesn’t have a dribble of infected people coming back restarting the problem month after month.

Not talking is never a good idea, but totally agree you should check your sources. First and foremost look at the WHO, who are reporting on a global scale on speed, mortality, preparedness and response.

Don’t watch tv.

I'm dyslexic, so language has always been a barrier that I've had to work hard to combat.  I always think I can say, or should've said something better after I post and read it, which is why you see my posts edited umpteen times.

In reference TO the numbers—Worldometer and Johns Hopkins have been virtually running neck'n neck with statistics, and they have the death rate at 11% worldwide.

Plus, we don't know how many "flu" victims had the virus, as testing in the US was delayed for weeks, and STILL is not widely available.  I can't trust the US numbers because we simply. don't. know.

And WHO ( and I don't mean the Word Health Organization ) is to blame for that because he DOWNPLAYED IT?! That's right, it doesn't matter. What matters is that we stick together as a species and defeat this thing with science and technology. And hope to the Universe we learn a lesson from it.
