Ah, yet another "when I was a mod" spiel xD

DU is different than most other sites. The thought of it being run by certain people on here who seem hungry to do so... *shudders*

..as you can see by Lepps recent posts, he's pretty awesome and only wants what's best for DU :)
those of us who have been mods or run our own sites have some experience to make comparisons. it's natural to do so.

really? who would these "hungry" people be, now? i am sure you don't mean me, since i would still BE a mod at a much larger site if i wanted to; modship? ha,  neither time nor inclination... certainly no inclination. being a mod is a pretty thankless task that eats into any spare time one has that is better (for me) to use creating poetry and interacting with other writers.

i don't doubt lepp's desire for what's best for the site. i simply stated the comments he made here, publicly, were not in the best interest of the site from the point of view of someone new to the site.

Ms. Butters, I will give you an analogy which hopefully will explain the frustration we're all expressing here.

About 3 months ago my boss decided to flip around my normal schedule of day shifts, to night shifts, back to day shifts, to mid shifts...and sadly with some of those night shifts there were no 8 hours in between to showing up the next day which is against the law.
I expressed my frustration to my immediate supervisor, then few weeks later i went to the boss herself and told her how determental the whole situation is and is becoming and her answer was besides alot of excuses...wait 2 more weeks and things will go back to normal.

I waited 2 weeks, i waited 3 weeks the same shit continued and i felt duped, fooled..so went to HR and it got fixed.

So here's how i feel this is parallel to my experience.
I feel this whole thread of poll, talking, exchanging ideas and expressing solutions..etc. Was nothing but giving us some sandbox to play making us to believe that we can actually build a foundation, solution, retraction to an overlooked mistake(s) and all the promise that the missing or hidden nomination to be restored was played upon us like a fool.
Nothing was done the whole time we were all here talking, discussing, partaking in the poll...nothing was restored, pulled back from the voting...nor given a proper explanation.
And if there are people on here feeling that host is not all that present at the site as is, how can he have full on attention to a comp he's hosting and especially creating this particular thread to be discussed and checks in on occasion..would you still feel that people are too haste in asking for someone who can devote more close attention so there are no blunders as huge as this one?
hi, mz layla, just spotted your reply to me here. sorry, wasn't ignoring you.

i fully understand the frustration and sense of 'wtf'ness when the proper channels have been gone through and still no satisfactory resolution. i also have no problems in seeing people express their frustrations to reflect that. These forums are on public display, are they not? it's my impression they are though if i'm wrong then my thoughts apply only to new members, not the public in general. my point was more about the image it projects when mods say the sorts of things i read here.

a site's well-being and public perception depends on the behaviour of their members, mods, and admin. if newcomers—or those browsing the site—see mods (particularly) posting in such a way, it creates a certain specific impression that is detrimental to the kind of public image i would have thought any writing site would wish to promote.

there IS a difference, as far as i'm concerned at least, between the kind of candid speech encouraged/accepted by regular members and that of a mod. the very term 'moderator' implies the kind of behaviour we should expect from those who take on the job. another reason why i prefer NOT to mod nowadays and enjoy expressing myself more freely as a member.

anyway, looks like this is all going to be wrapped up nicely, with someone stepping up to take on the job and it's good to hear from lobo that he's doing okay and has found time to reply here.

Lady, I take your critique. I think you're wrong though.

far as mods coming here saying they used to be mods and pointing out stuff, we've had tons of them, so in that respect I think Umm was right to speak her mind

site takes a bit of getting used to. Most of the people here are assets to the site, most know me and the way I talk. if you find it offensive I'm sorry for your offence

or "not in the interest of the site" that's your opinion and I'm glad you offered it

I'm here 8 years, I've seen every type of person come and go and I've seen the site grow to what it is now. I very much love the site and will do anything i can to see it flourish

fair to say, (in my opinion) some of the stuff you' e written aren't in the best interest of the site, so it's a dont throw stones in a glasshouse type thing

anyhow , I think this thread is resolved now. stay tuned for an announcement from Lobo when he gets a chance

Was gonna reply sooner but got a bit distracted. Anyways. ..that seems like a rhetorical question, but in case it's not, I'm not going to name names as it's just my opinion.

@Lepp, happy to hear the comp issue is solved!

I'm off to draw c:

All neat and tied up in a lovely bow - wonderful - the site is turning into a Rolf Harris portrait  - "Can you tell what it is yet?"

There are a few people who can see the writing on the wall - it is spelt incorrectly and written in crayon

We may need a new name - SDU, BDU, KDU, KLU KLUX DU, LTDU, or maybe DUPED or DUD - wonders about the term community

I ask because I went to edit one of my poems and it came up with a box that said it would also modify my poem on the poem of the month page. Well that was a surprise. 'I had no idea my poem was selected for poem of the month back in September. I got no notification that I am aware of. I'm not really sure if I was, but it seemed to suggest my poem was. So how do I find this elusive page?

To me, an experience like this suggests that all nominees should be notified of nomination, especially since more new members will be getting nominated.  It's possible that new members might not have the patience and tenacity to get to the bottom of such confusion as us seasoned members, but instead, will be reaching out for user friendly format in order to be encouraged to participate..

Just a suggestion :)

If a nominee wins, as with any competition here on DUP, there’s a message sent to one’s DUP updates’ notifications (My updates).

Contacting the nominee is left to the member doing the nomination, as the nominee may choose to refuse being in a contest.

Something similar to JJ s experience happened to me.  I was nominated for poem of the month on a couple of random months.  Even though I was subscribed to the thread, a week or more went by before I noticed I had been nominated, since the poets who nominated me did not notify me.  New members may not even know about poem of the month and can't effectively choose to opt out unless they've been notified, or, possibly embrace the idea and participate.  Wouldn't it make sense to mention in the comp rules that nominees must be notified, that way it won't any longer be a grey area?  I'd just hate to see new, quality members get discouraged by any confusion.  I hope the comp organizers can consider this..

i'd agree with this completely.

i didn't realise the nominated authors wouldn't get auto-notifications and didn't ask/tell those i had about it. i've also had my own poetry nominated and only noticed it later. since the nominated poems appear on the page, rather than just a link to the published piece, that's a little disconcerting. great that someone nominates a person, not so great if you'd prefer your work not to be showing up all over the place and didn't even realise that was happening.

so, yeah, some sort of alert for sure. as i suggested in the other thread i made about this topic, some sort of pop-up notice or, as Jade thought, for it to be listed in the updates along with everything else?

I understand the concern in this, but the bottomline is, that’s a matter of basic courtesy that falls to the responsibility of the member making the nomination.

It’s a matter of a simple PM saying, “Hey I love your work here, would you mind if I nominate it for Poem of the Month?”

That’s why the three week time frame is built into the competition, for that communication to happen.

As the DUP system I s configured now, when one enters any competition the system recognizes entries as the property of the person posting.  Hence, if poet A nominates poet B for poem of the month, and the poem wins, poet A gets the notification of the “win”.  The site administrator then has to go into the system to properly award poet B the win.  ...

So, again if that’s a concern, members need to exercise a certain level of discretion and courtesy for one another, and simply ASK before you nominate.

... with that said,  YES - it should be in the rules, BUT just as it’s stated very clearly “no self nominations” - there’s always anywhere from 3-5 members, some times long time members, who nominate themselves 🙄

Not exactly. The three week nominating period was to allow three weeks of nominations and a week of site voting each month.  It really had nothing to do with notifying nominees on the nominater's part.

When the comp first started I took it upon myself as host to post this blurb on the poem which was actually nominated ( see Image attached ). This served two purposes: firstly, marketing the competition; and, secondly, notifying the nominee.

I understand the new host/ess may be too busy; however, a rule could be incorporated into the guidelines that simply says:

All nominators must notify their nominees of nominations.

That simple. Seriously.

And for the record, from the inception, there were never any self nominations allowed in this competition.

i had no idea i was supposed to notify the author of spills i've nominated.
Never read this into the rules or anywhere until now.

i always figured it would be a pleasant surprise to the author if and when they won.

However,
i will be adding this to the rules for the Newcomers' Poem of the month
