I do not aspire to Poetry - or to be called Poet - neither should you - it is a matter of no consequence what you are called. To call oneself or be called by others - is a pretension - a human folly. Say the things that you say - and be satisfied with that. To call oneself a Poet is a sign of stupidity - for it indicates a certainty and a confidence that can have no logical basis.

I aspire more to being creative, if I am asked what my hobbies are, then creative writing, being creative, decorating and boxing would be my answer. I don't really give a fuck what other people think of the terminology I use.
"Poetry" is just another way of saying literary work etc.

so let's not call anyone a baker, or a surgeon, a carpenter or a car mechanic, a teacher or a scientist, a politician or pianist! let's just wipe away ALL names for things that apply to people doing things

i do not 'aspire to poetry', i aspire to write what wants to be written (from within) and then take THAT that and TRY to put it into the best words/images/sounds/other poetic considerations that convey its message most successfully
there is nothing wrong with aspiring to better an innate talent
as for the name 'poet' - it's not something that bothers me either way. i write poetry; if people want to call me a poet, or not, that's down to them and has no impact on my writing

Surely this depends on your individual interpretation of the word poet.
I’ve told this story many times, but imma tell it again because it’s relevant.
When I was starting out studying my Druid grades, I joined a forum of fellow students in which one of the chats regarded whether we had the right to call ourselves Druids or not.
Somebody replied to me there — if you wake up every morning, and the spirit of the land and the ancestors is with you, if you feel the heartbeat of the earth, if you honour the land, her history and her wildness in all you do — then you’re a Druid. And you have every right to call yourself one.
Apply that to poetry.
If you wake up every morning with a pen in your hand, if not writing would cause you to burst, if it would kill you to be silent rather than write it down, if it comes bursting out of you in whatever form that takes... then babe, you’re a poet.
Label or not, it doesn’t mean anything. It’s just a description of what you are. You state that to call yourself a poet is a sign of stupidity.... why?
I’m also a human being. That’s just fact.
Same as I’m a wordsmith.

totally disagree despite certain labels being attached to people. to aspire to be a poet is a noble quest for sure.
this is the kind of BS that puts some people to even trying to put pen to paper. There are many people on here that claim not to be poets and these very ones have created much mighty fine poem. Most poets in my experience are self-deprecating. So this comment in my view is stupid and ill-informed. It is negative posturing.
I am a poet, though sometimes really lacking in confidence, most of us poets do.
Do many on here create great poetry? (rhetorical) this message will do nothing positive to encourage a poets journey - no matter what path he choses.

"Poet"
should our eyes grow wild upon
this diet of ambrosia and dust;
and should these visions torment us
with howling griefs, outrageous joys the same;
should comfort and distress become
our burn, our greed, our fevered daily bread--
will laurels, earned, be worth the name they say?
or is it, still, a price too high to pay?

I just thought of a question!
If you have such a low opinion on Poets, why are you here?

It is a matter of some consequence what you are called: no one wants a greengrocer to turn up when they need an ambulance.
I do not quite understand that last sentence; seems to be playing a bit too much with words, where emotions and logic are smushed together because they all have something to do with the head and brain. (Don't get me wrong; not going to start saying how emotion and logic are separate or opposites or anything like that. - Just sounds a bit strange to say confidence can have no logical basis; s often confidence is personal and subjective while logic tends to be objective and impersonal: but not always.)
Not entirely sure why the vehemence towards the term poet or poetry: no one has forced that upon you. Pretty sure you came here of your own free will. Words, especially English words, tend to be rather inexact but they are rather handy signposts and markers, until we can sufficiently convey thoughts via telepathy or something like that.
If you don't want to be called a poet or have any of your stuff referred to as poetry, fine, that is your preference. But if you want to go on an anti-poet crusade; there are plenty of more important things a short fleeting existence could do, and DU is also not a suitable place for such an unwarranted tirade.

in a sense of generosity towards the OP, perhaps the intent of the post was to highlight the concept that the value of our writing lies in making that connection between what's inside us>the page/screen where others can read it and react as they will, without bothering with the labels and conceits of what does it mean 'to be a poet' and 'am i writing poetry?'
maybe, maybe not, but its wording was a tad clumsy if the interpretation above is what they intended to convey.

but i will get into this, here:
out of curiosity, if you went into a book shop looking for poetry books and the salesperson asked if they could help you, what would you ask them to show you?
if someone has had books published of material most would term 'poetry', and derives income from those, what term would you use to describe their profession?
why have you got such a hair up your butt about the terms 'poet' and 'poetry'? these are simply workaday labels and yet you call people stupid for using them as if they imply something "elitist"? i should tell the next electrician i hire that they oughtn't call themselves that but just go with the flow of working with the electricity of the universe.
