Myself, I Confess

Not just a survivor, I am a combatant
silently stalking the path least traveled

It's best you get out of my way
Else be prepared to pay

Your dignity will be my trophy

I am a gladiator, each day my arena
Fighting for just one more breath
I scream, I bleed, I plead, I fall
You’ll never get to savor my death

Once again I find strength after all
Dazed, shaken, yet I stand tall

I may be broken, haunted
exhausted beyond reason, taunted
You will never get me to kneel
I pray, take your best shot

See? You’ll never bring me to heel
For I am everything you are not

You believed yourself superior
legacies attached to your name
A pedestal was your footstool
Tell me, now who is the fool?

Adjust, adapt, do keep up
The world is no longer the same.

Some Hard Pills To Swallow

There are those who will disguise you
for not falling for their lies
There are those who will despise you
and plan on your demise
There are those who will not hear you
for you’re not their ideal of wise
and those who will divide you
for in unity strength lies

There are those who try to keep you
and destroy your self belief
and those who overload you
while falsely offering relief
there are those who build you
to be what you are not
and those who will deny you
claim that they forgot

There are those who say they know you
while whispering amongst spies
and ridicule you
as they paint themselves as wise
There are those who want to be you
while trying to make you more like them
and those who will never see you
until they’re forced to look again

There are few who really know you
like you for all you are
and one or two who will truly aid you
to push beyond the stars
But lots who will claim they made you
say without them
you would have never got this far
as they drink away their failures
‘till last orders at the bar

You are the one that made you
with some help
there is little doubt
So claim your own successes
you don’t have to scream and shout
Know your worth
go get what you deserve
look the world in the face
and keep your nerve

Hope

What a life when trapped inside the mind
But a choice I have on the way I paint it
Gray doesn't seem like the right fit
When my surrounding commit
Better, different, brighter color
Yellow will shine inside my mind
Aware to what I am and I hope to become
Keeps me stroking the brush on my gray canvas.

This life, all I have known since birth
challenges me to break, shade a tear
At times it wins but I see clear
No out without in, no sun without dark
No scars without sin, I stay awake in the fire.

Outlaw

I know I write in strictest rhyming form
In schemes that seem to flow like rivers do,
That some adore yet many others fear.

But damn! I’m a C-section from a storm,
That’s something no one understands or knew;
Ripped from the womb of Nature’s bitter tears.

On how to pen I never knew the rules.
I wandered on my own a vagabond,
An illustrator sketching words of verse.

I didn’t fuss or fret elitist fools,
With all their fancy ink I wouldn’t bond,
And ever since consider me a curse.

‘Cause here I am an outlaw to the last,
And was before I tried to scribe my first.
Be damn the rhyme, I write the future past,
To save a soul & quench an outlaw’s thirst.

Behearted

All I could see was destruction.
The hole you left in my heart, gaping.
Was this idea of your construction?
To add desolation with no hope of escaping.

You claim to have lost your love for a while.
If that is true, then why did you remain?
Was you leaving me for another an example of your guile?
After all this was not the first time you hurt another for your personal gain.

You have left, but your memory will stay.
Your image forever engraved into my brain.
How I wish your presence upon my mind would go away.
After all your memory is nothing more than a stain.

You tugged and you tugged, on my heart with a string.
You should have know it takes more to de throne a king.

Can't Break Me Down

I was born right before a hurricane,
Grams said it was nonstop wind and rain,
But the storm didn’t break us down,
When I was older the civil war came,
Dodging bullets is not a game,
But I didn’t let that break me down.

I’ve seen shit no man should ever see,
I’ve felt the tracers fly past me,
All I could do was just hit the ground,
I was only but eight years old,
To survive I had to be bold,
Because death makes a loud sound.

But of all the scariest things I’ve seen,
(Some of you will know what I mean)
And this one really takes the crown,
Was the time I was near my slaughter,
When I raised my teenage daughters,
But still they couldn’t break me down.

Warrior

With my heart beating loudly in my
Chest and my sweaty palms I refused
To back down from the challenge that
Was awaiting me. I refused to cry
Any more than I already have. He confused
Me with someone who does not combat

Their demons or shadows every day.
That night I stayed awake until 2 am
Because once again he made me feel
Like I was unlovable, but that one ray
Of sunshine poked through a broken dam
That tried to drown me. I am made of steel

And all the strong stuff. I went right past
The red flags because I loved hard as
I always do no matter the situation or
Person. I am made to survive and last
Long past the winter’s storm. What has
Me down does not matter as I ignore

The doubters and haters because
They think they know my weakness
When in truth they know absolutely
Nothing about me. They never pause
And ask right questions. The bleakness
In my eyes never caused their mutely

Mouths to truly ask me about me.
Instead they ask me about my job
and not enough asking about if I got
Enough sleep. I wonder if they see
What they want to see. A girl bobbing
And weaving to the top. They forgot

That I have obstacles too and that is how
I became a warrior standing on her feet now.

Oh wow, I'm so surprised by this. There were so many great entries (judging a comp is never easy)! Congrats to Missy and Eswaller for runner up positions and to our host, I'm thankful for the honor. I'll share with my daughters too.
