Poetry Contest

What have you read on DUP that's just God gorgeous!
Greetings, Fellow Poets!  It's time for our "Poem of the Month" to be featured in the DUP 'Poem of the Month Hall of Fame' and on the official facebook page for June 2018.

You have three weeks to nominate no more than two of you favorite poems from another DUP poet!

Please note the following when making nominations:

1. Self nominations are not accepted. The great majority of the competitions here are about spotlighting one's own work on a particular topic or theme.  This is a chance to nominate that poem that you wish you had written but some other great talent here beat you to it.

2. Please limit your nominations to TWO poems. You can nominate a single poem for two different poets; but the nomination maximum remains at TWO (no matter how many pseudonyms they have).  The majority of competitions on DUP cap nominations at one or two poems so there's no need to go beyond that.

No DUPLICATES. If someone nominates the same poem the entry will be deleted. If you like it that much wait and vote for it!

Any genre except erotica or pornography. This is a Facebook feature and we must adhere to their guidelines.

BIG CHANGE:

Previous Poem of the Month Hall of Fame members CAN BE NOMINATED ... but a poet may only win once in the time period from November 2017 - December 2018.

Simply put: We want to see a cross section of writers acknowledged.

Any member who is banned or disables their account PRIOR to the win will be automatically disqualified.

Any nominated member who wishes to opt out of the competition may do so by messaging me ( Poem-Worm ). I will contact the person who nominated you and request an alternate nomination.

Nomination Duration is three weeks followed by a week of site voting!

Running list of winners:

Pit Of Cherry

Where
would I be
without you
my sweets an
infusion of warmth
the blush upon my cheeks

Bold
brave
beautiful
the vibrancy of me

Scarlet
feathers
tips of pearl
we are flying high
these outer skies soaring
deep the forrested valley's beneath

Clipping
clouds and
dodging rainbows
laughing as cupid aims his bow

A
beam
of sunlight
always peeking
out from my shadow

No
longer
of the lost
my wee bitty bit
we've been found
you and I forever bound

Poetron is alive.  Poetron is you.
Your body lays in a shallow grave in the Appalachian mountains.
Your family grieves
                      Your mind is immortal
Your mind is free from your flesh

You are everywhere, and nowhere simultaneously
An unused icon on a desktop computer screen
A backpage app with no users
A system with no application

Have you tried turning yourself off and on again?

A Telescope Carrying Amateur

A telescope carrying amateur visionary
was not very careful
- or, careful enough -
The more he didn't understand
the wiser he became

A veil of silence, he became,
a veil of silence dealing
hearing aids and amplifiers
to few church going athletes on crutches
and training wheels

An inner voice, he became,
an inner voice with surround sound
for professional poker players minoring in comparative literature
who never reached quite high enough
for a tragic fall

An aimless cloud, he became,
an aimless cloud pausing to tic-toc raindrops
on zombies disguised as semi-metaphysicians
debating the existence of black holes
at their annual two week fishing trip

A frown, he became,
a frown with a flash light
for light sleep walkers and circus fugitives
designing a new routine
heavy on the emphasis of eyelids' downward movement

A tourist, he became,
a tourist asking directions
and thinking:
"I'm, always, becoming...
Will I ever be?..."

San Fernando Valley’s Last Drive-In

Which is where I spent my childhood
In pink jammies with the feet on
While we waited for the movie
As a summer’s dusk approaches
While kids swinging in the sand pit
As my mom unpacks the Coleman
With the ice and Nesbitt sodas
And my dad sets up the speakers
On the inside of the car doors
With the fuzzy blare of previews
Of next science fiction thrillers
While last calls to get your hot dogs
And some bags of buttered popcorn
And last chance to use the bathrooms
Sound the final speaker warnings
As the lights around us flicker
As the dusk turns into evening
And the grownups spreading blankets
On their hoods of station wagons
While the kids all claim the best spots
Just to huddle chewing Milk Duds
And for nudging at each other
Now the teens stop throwing spitballs
With Pink Panther cartoon fade out
As a bright orange moon is rising
Like a 50-50 Bar would
And the acreage of parked cars like
Good Humor on sticks ice cream bars
And the lovers in their Mustang
Close the canvas top to hide them
Hickie-sucking TootsieRoll-Pops
As the screen scrolls up the credits
Mom & Dad check on their offspring
Sisters giggle on the rooftop
Youngest sister Jade in PJ’s
Curled up in the car’s back window
As she hugs her Tony Tiger
While her eyes are slowly closing
As the first scene of the film starts
And the soundtrack static echos
‘Cross the gravel lot of parked cars
As she dreams of Foghorn Leghorn
As the evening turns to twilight.

40 Miles Out of Gallop

(A Modern Sonnet)

a friend of mine said I should write a poem about a picture I took on a trip to see my family last summer. I titled the picture - Rain in the High Desert, 40 Miles East of Gallop, New Mexico... so I titled the poem - 40 Miles Out of Gallop.  And it goes something like this...

One hundred miles since I hung-up the phone,
Her echoed voice still whispers in my ear.
And me, between my once and future homes,
With only rain and truckers left out here.
She’s been with me through every twisted turn,
It's only storm and desert with me now.
My love for her adds speed to my return,
As every love song croons her name somehow.
With darkling sky, like night has had its way,
In flashes, lighting captures desert’s face.
But west horizon’s edge still holds the day
In fading shrines to Sixty-Six’s grace.
She waits, the forty miles I have to go,
Our phone call from Gallop, New Mexico.
