Poetry Contest Description
One poem per poet on their view of current politics
Welcome to Cloud Cuckoo Land
No-one explained what Brexit meant
Yet they got the voters consent,
Now they are in such confusion
Ideas are spreading in profusion.
Brexit means Brexit
Do we agree?
Leave Europe and we'll be free.
A hard brexit will cause disaster,
Especially if we leave faster,
We need to trade if we are to thrive,
Interim agreements hard to contrive,
Brexit means Brexit
Do we agree?
Leave Europe and we'll be free.
If all European workers left,
The economy would be bereft.
Few nurses to help us when ill,
Fruit will be unpicked still.

Every lorry will have to be checked
The WTO tarriff must be correct.
Holidays in Europe will be more pricey,
Retirement in the sun much more dicey

and spell it out in “Plain English”,
so that perhaps I’m a little more clear:
“Brexit”—yeah that was supposed to be
the name of the next great granola cereal,
to get your economy back on track, but
since you put a foot out the door,
let’s get this done; in or out?
ISIS—tsk, tsk; don’t you know
that there are no gods before me, and
in demolition derbys, you’re supposed to
hit the other cars
and not the people?
Do unto others, you know……duly noted,
see you in the virgin-less afterlife…..
America—Hillary does not become President
if you oust Trump; Pence does, and either way,
he’s on my side, too. So
get your kids vaccinated, stop bringing back
all the pestilence I gave you the power
to eradicate, because Thimerosal does not
cause autism—the devil does, and he’s headed for
the Lake of Fire.
I could go on,
and on,
and on,
and on…… but since no stone shall be left unturned
at my Second Coming,
the Mexican Immigration Wall, will come down as well
regardless of who builds it, though
since China doesn’t need theirs anymore,
why don’t you have all your prisoners chain-gang it
over to Texas
on China’s dime,
then at least it’ll be a worthwhile import as opposed to
the cheap plastic scam-wear they’re mass producing.

The status of this world and country just dropped.
There is hidden hopelessness, sadness, anger and rage
Threatening to come out. It has erased every stride
We have taken forward and into the shining light.
We should never have to think that people have lied
And said that years ahead are better when the fight
Is not getting easier. The work my parents’ generation
Did has been undone and buried away into history.
This destruction will bring this world and nation
Down to its knee. That is what hell and its blistery
Ways will bring. Chaos and misery, but there
Might be some unity in there somewhere.
