(a modern sonnet)
Was diagnosed with cancer of the brain,
Though not the word they used when I was told.
Went far beyond the bound'ries to be sane,
That had me set adrift and still be whole.
I feel my nails grow underneath the quick,
Both hands and feet that clench with angry stain.
As how I was before, I'm not as sick,
Yet can't recall when last I felt no pain.
Let bloodied mangle of my body cease,
That can't be seen without, but turns within.
Until my time, I find no rest, no peace,
This conflagration is the price of sin?
And yet I walk uneven paths of hope,
The only way that I can live and cope.

crying in the car
on the way home from
weeks of cabins and forest
the lights of suburban streets
became the last source of light besides the glow
of house interiors
the moon behind a cloud, afraid of
the dark sky that awaits it to come out.
my eyelids met and lips folded inward
each opened again, to only find a tear
attempting to make it's way towards the pink flesh of my cheek.
resistant, i wiped it,
despite the remembrance meeting my conscious.
his hands against the flesh
the flesh beneath the fabric i had tie-dyed a week prior.
a week prior, i had not discovered the chance to prepare
nor was i aware of anything to prepare for.
the upturned corners of my cheeks had drawn closer to my chin
as his hands drew further down.
each thought was more clear than the tear that went forth down
this time, i didn't resist.
my head collapsed towards grey cushioning
my seatbelt became tighter around my stomach
as his hands had, too
i fell asleep
only to wake up to that memory of what just happened again
for every day since.
