So I know I said no restrictions on word count, but i really don't have the time to read dissertations by all of you guys. So don't write a book length piece!
Best of luck! You have a week to complete your piece. Please title and post your poem here by 11:59 pm EST on Friday, February 26.
If you have any questions, feel free to message me.
I look forward to reading!

(Jethro Tull: Locomotive Breath)
steam engine infidelities
the penitents are there in this atrocious gathering
to worship at the argent-eyed altar
of hardcore rock & contained savagery.
the air is smoke & ash
we breathe the music of each other, & of them.
there is no choreography,
the bleating of the instruments is not pastoral.
the minstrel & balladeer, a wild-haired Pan
speaking birdsongs through his flute,
struts the stage without sensuality:
but we watch, & we are aroused.
a band of scarred veterans they are,
besieged by the sweat & dope of celebrity;
uniformed in leather & camo, they may have been
rebels who sought to usurp intolerant kings,
or riffed soldiers who bled on the sands of desert storms.
clandestinely, they make us aware
that war rages in lands where there is no music.
in days beyond this night
we will go there to die.
a sexual vibrancy cascades off the metal strings
of the guitars & the branded canvas of the drums.
it invades & corrupts us:
an urgency that I refuse to discard.
somewhere in this mosh chamber,
there is a girl who will journey with me to that valley of fire,
and I will find her here...
or else I will not.

A warrior unfulfilled / Un guerrero no cumplido
I come and spend the evening
Vengo y pasar la noche.
I grow tired of the night.
Me canso de la noche.
Where is the beauty of my life?
¿Dónde está la belleza de mi vida?
Why do I not feel it in me,
Por qué no siento lo en mí.
To bring up a new generation.
Para que aparezca una nueva generación.
I am a woman, young and strong,
So why should I kill my last enemy?
Soy una mujer, joven y fuerte, así que
¿por qué debo mato a mi último enemigo?
To remember me in eternity
when she is pierced through by another.
Para recordar conmigo en la eternidad
cuando se perfora a través de otro.
Has it forsaken me because
I forsake my husband's legacy?
¿Ha me abandonado porque yo
abandonaré herencia de mi esposo?
The faces of my unborn children wait
for me to give them their destiny.
Las caras de mis hijos por nacer
me esperan para darles su destino.
I grow weary of the moon, and
go where the sun will honor me.
Me estoy cansando de la luna,
y voy donde el sol me honrará .
