Sunk Deep in Baton Rouge
“Hello Pops. Sorry to intrude on my wonderfully studious young man in the middle of deep tort contemplations, but I have a little problem. Our house has flooded. So here I am with no adult assistance with our three-year-old son and the water, water is everywhere to borrow a phrase from Coleridge’s ‘Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner.’ Could you get in that wonderful jalopy your Mom bought for us and take us to dry ground?”
“The car is flooded as well I am afraid. I am at the chapel on campus. Wait just a short while and I am sure the car will revive...

Rest In Peace, Mom - Part VII
Wednesday was your least favorite day and you died on a Wednesday.
After living for sixty-four years, you became sick and you passed away.
The eleventh anniversary of your death is on your least favorite day of the week.
I thought things were fine at first but then I learned that your situation was bleak.
When you went to the hospital, you had to go under the knife.
The surgeon tried his very best but he could not save your life.
He operated on your stomach and your leg had to be amputated.
But you still died and when I found you dead, I was devastated. ...

Ingratitude
I see you, mom, as you leave
a trace of yourself
on everything you touch:
the shallow glasses my sister
keeps filling up with Coke,
the doorknob that sends you
into a world of supermarkets,
pharmacies and banks,
the bright screen that passes
for a friend from Monday morning
to Sunday evening.
You leave a trace of yourself
on everything, on everyone,
yet, who gives back to you?
What's the reward for the years
that fall behind you
as you work your sad magic?
People and things
remain cold to your touch, ...
a trace of yourself
on everything you touch:
the shallow glasses my sister
keeps filling up with Coke,
the doorknob that sends you
into a world of supermarkets,
pharmacies and banks,
the bright screen that passes

Little Wolves
Come here little darlings
I know the wind can scream scary
and we've been walking through the storm
but I'll protect you
Stay by me little wolves
I'll always be your Luna
and though the forest has caught fire
I'll provide for you
You don't ever have to be scared
I love you more than I can bear
even when I'm not there
if you call I'll come running I swear
Close your eyes little ones
I'll watch over you when there is no sun
we can play by the water in the morning
and I'll chase you as you run
...

the farewell
The farewell
The family visitors from the town
was standing by the roadway
waiting for the bus
taking them back into the town
He, the boy, came from
although the boy liked staying
at the farm, his heart belonged
with those leaving.
He heard the bus approach and stop
He was hiding behind a stone-fence
No, he wasn’t going to cry
They called his name
but only when the bus left
did he get up and waved

Bar Mitzvah Rituals of the Maltese Brotherhood
Bar Mitzvah Rituals of the Maltese Brotherhood
“Hey there Sherri, the fly of my son’s undies has a stain that just won’t come out. Can you work your magic and remove it?”
“Come again, isn’t he eighteen? Shouldn’t he be past that stage?”
“Don’t I wish, eighteen is the peak of their hormones.”
“Is this the same kind you had me scrub until my fingers were red last time?”
“It is only the aloe cucumber lotion. He took his underwear off before achieving ‘O’.”
“How do you know it is just lotion? Surely he didn’t tell you.”
“Believe me the scent...

Postmortem Letter
With calloused hands
you snuffed out the primordial spark,
you drove the nails into
the living wood of infancy
with the eyes of a father,
the heart of a sphinx,
will you let me find my cloud
in this blinding black sky?
All that's left of you
is the algebra of your life,
cryptic letters on a cold, dead stone,
will I ever cut the rope
that strangles my neck
or will I succumb
to the demon that whips my back
on this crooked path to hell?

New Year's Eve
On this new year's Eve
We lay on each other's side
Our fingers entwine
As we hold each other's hand
Tonight is different
From the other new year's Eve
We had before 2023
The festive mood is absent
We are both pensive
Lost in thought as we think
About our son sleeping on the next room
Who just had his first acquaintance with alcohol
Both of us were shocked
To see him in a state of intoxication
We never expected him to take a sip of alcohol
And this is the first time that we have to deal with it as...

Sphinx
My father was a silent man,
a sphinx that never gave me a chance
to solve its riddle.
He had few words to share
but he knew how to use them to stab me,
even in broad daylight.
I couldn't ignore his soft, polite cruelty,
his mild-mannered darkness.
I knew his where the whispers of a snake,
the treacheries of a seasoned trickster.
I just couldn't prove it.
He left nothing but ruins in his wake,
dust and stones, the bones of my youth.
What am I going to do now
with this mound of ashes?
He disappeared before his time ...
a sphinx that never gave me a chance
to solve its riddle.

Professorial Temptress
Professorial Temptress
A professorial seductress bends like a cattail
To write her runes for chalkboard junkies
Algebraic news to fill the pages
Of textbook boys that are her specialty
In a French maid pose for moon-eyed pupils
Johnny reports the preposterous teacher
To the chagrin of his mother
“I once was her. I will be a guest at your next class.”
The trigonometric temptress
Prances like a formula hot rod from paradise
But she is Belladonna of dark magic
For her gaga guy audience.
His mother ...

Happy Birthday, Mom - Part X
You were a very special and unique person until you passed away.
If you hadn't died, you would be celebrating your 74th birthday.
You were honest, unselfish and sincere.
You should've won Mother Of The Year.
I would've bought you a cake if you were still alive.
Today is special because your birthday has arrived.
I can't celebrate your birthday with you because you died in 2013.
Your death was very painful, it was the worst thing I've ever seen.
You were always a caring and generous person, that's something that I proclaim.
It saddened...
