A Good Father

They made their agreement over cards and balls of mozzarella in a plastic cup. ‘Like New York gangsters’ said Louis, putting down a royal flush and another wad of cheese in his mouth. Michael laughed. ‘How’s Becky?’ asked Louis. That stopped Michael’s laughter. He glanced at the ceiling. ‘Slightly better’ he said. ‘But she’s got a way to go. You try to be a good father, strong. But it’s hard, you know? Seeing her like that.’ Louis nodded.
The next day the house played host to another visitor. His name was Pete and he was young, out of uni, and starting work...

Digging Deep One More Hole
I never meant to be so heartless, yet sentiment can't help explain.
It seems a means to an end regardless, if there is proof to fault or blame.
Another night is spent in darkness, judgement and level head is regained.
Day break is civilized, Dawn is harmless. Now that I'm civil once again.
As I dig in the dark near the car I have parked, so the headlights can shine-
Cause without them I'm blind. Hours ago I awoke to a timeline that broke.
