Tribute to the Memory of my Late, Great Mother
Blanche Medorah Cunningham Bowen
(1913 February 06-2020 July 14)
“Motherhood: All love begins and ends there.”—Robert Browning
my mother passed this way
a century and eleven years ago.
memories cannot decay,
although the rusts of time across them blow.
she has no further cares,
where once her heart heaved underneath the strain
of sentiments and fears
that rattled hard against her windowpane.
my mother was the earth,
fertile with an abundance of...

the execution
the night of the executions
On the roof of his loft room, there was a half-open window
by climbing up on a chair, he could see over
the rim and eye
the camp for Russian prisoners of war.
on clear nights, especially when the moon was almost full
he was fascinated by the details and could see the upland
and the village bathed in blue and silver.
it was in the middle of a war,
the boy was five years old
and had been sent to a farm to be safe from nightly sirens
that had frightened him

Forgiveness
My mother said, “Lauryn,
you’ll know when it’s time
to give yourself away. Just
be sure he’s worthy.”
Like many parents, my mother
was wrong about some things.
How could she have known that
the man taking my innocence
shared her bed?
I hope the daughter growing in me
will forgive my mistakes.

A Mother's Might
A pureness;
I shall protect you
from the pain and trials
of this world.
Not ever doubt you
those round cheeks in smiles
sweetest of my world.
Your cuteness;
Is most definitely unrivaled
no question
affection always entitled.
I hope you'll live a happy life
No pain nor trials to stop your path
In a long journey such as life
Make sure to learn yourself some math!
Success and ever blessed luck
Meet ones to share your love
But never give it away for a few buck ...

Liquid Gold
Our color was predestined
From the beginning of time
An armada of femininity
Behind each of our eyes
Resonate and radiate
Nurture our womanly glamour
As we design our golden age
With untarnished beauty
Bestow future legacies
Of mothers and daughters
With precious liquified metal
Our wisdom will never rust
Teaching love’s glory
Between woman and man
Penmanship forever lasting
Never smudged or cold
As we pour priceless treasure
From our legendary hearts
Elegance combined with ...

Morning Prayer to Something
How wonderous it is
to be alive.
How beautiful to feel the depths of
an animal's lust for life.
Surely all that we are given
is meant for such use
by our Creator.

Conversation Between Friends
You’re not showing yet?”
“No, it’s only been about ten weeks,” Lauryn said. “The doctor said my baby bump might start to show in a month or so.”
“I was reading an article called “Lucky 13.” It said around that same time I could expect my breasts to get bigger and my nipples to get browner. Sounds like fun.”
The two laughed. A few were sitting at the bar but it was early afternoon so tables were empty.
“I’m so excited for you,” Megan said.

Ingratitude
I see you, mom, as you leave
a trace of yourself
on everything you touch:
the shallow glasses my sister
keeps filling up with Coke,
the doorknob that sends you
into a world of supermarkets,
pharmacies and banks,
the bright screen that passes
for a friend from Monday morning
to Sunday evening.
You leave a trace of yourself
on everything, on everyone,
yet, who gives back to you?
What's the reward for the years
that fall behind you
as you work your sad magic?
People and things
remain cold to your touch, ...

Infinite Possibilities - A Journal Entry
I came across an old photo from college days. We were classmates in the business department. It looks like our senior year.
It’s interesting how our lives turn out. Two of my friends are married with children. They seem very happy.
The girl on the left died in a 2019 car crash in Colorado. She and her future husband died a month before their wedding.
The two girls on the right are still looking for true love. By all reports they've both been searching in all the wrong places.
I try to remember what it was like when that photo was taken. I was in...

Beauty As I Know You Will Be
Where I search
You will find
Where I die
Life unto mine
Forgotten not
Line of my life
Feel man's plight
Devour their strife
My daughter
Or son
Take from me
For youth
Forgoes decay
In your
Beauty.

Smoke
Memory floats back like smoke
and I’m back in a pie-and-mash shop with mum;
it’s one of my few happy memories of her,
uncomplicated by the past and old resentments.
It’s a bright summer’s day in a seaside town
and we’ve walked three miles to here,
to be served from warming trays
by cockney ladies in tabards.
Because the smoking ban’s not yet enforced
my mother smokes as she sits beside me,
in memory like a clay carving
with pendulous breasts and potbelly.
I savour eel sauce across two stodgy pies
and mash as thick as...
