Or at least so I thought
Maybe I caught him in a midlife crisis
Maybe he should not have
Referred to me as Isis
In his dreams
Silly him
Is it my fault that his wife
Was ear hustling while he slept?
Listened closely as he snitched on himself
While he crept along my back alley

People make choices
Choices have consequences

First Cooking Lesson
The day before my wedding forty years ago
my mother taught me how to cook one meal
fried chicken
mash potatoes
homemade bread
and fudge
all cooked on an old woodstove.
After I got married
I decided electric was the way to go.

Picking Up the Pieces
He tore my heart apart
no real love there had ever been
ripped it into a million little pieces
and scattered it to the wind.
Never having any feelings
not one teeny tiny shred of decency
he brought my world down
crashing to my knees.
But then you came along
from out of nowhere it would seem
picking up those pieces
and filling in my empty void.
Asking me to marry you
wanting me by your side
it’s been forty years together now
and it’s been a beautiful ride.

From a time of interest I married thee and took thy hand in matrimony

My squires were great and vast and proud, your ladies noble, sweet and loud

From the castle, I took thee and we rode into the wood, into the grove where many have stood before

Don't Leave me Behind
He walks ahead of me,
at a faster pace than I.
He’s always several steps ahead,
it’s either do or die.
What’s the hurry?
Why can’t we just enjoy this time?
Try taking it a little slower,
let me finish this next rhyme.
There's no race to be won,
not that I can really see,
then he stops and waits,
ever so patiently for me.
Sometimes though I wonder,
if eventually the day will come,
when he finds it in his heart,
that I’m not his only one.

to think thoughts not hampered by dreams of childhood and
the embarrassment of teenage years and sexual clumsiness

Going up the stairs leading to her flat the steps appeared to be in pain not used to anyone walking on them at this hour
