rather be home with a scotch
now I sit in the pub struggling
with
half a pint of bitter and
a
sandwich instead of the roast dinner on
offer
me a night out
in the pub
and
I’ll say
yes,
although purely out
of
politeness

EXCEPT FOR THIS SONG THE CRICKETS SING (Jamaica Beach beach house, 10-6-1991; 1st poem I wrote after moving back to TX)
well here i am
returned again
back to the state
i was born in
back home
on my very first night

my temporary
though at this point
even that remains
profoundly uncertain
to either see or say

after moving back here

of historic galveston island

Last Sex
Her doctor looked at us both after Susan whispered the question. “Yes, you can still be intimate together. But think of life in terms of weeks from this point on. Treasure each moment.”
Susan looked at me with redness in her eyes. I felt like crying but didn’t.
We acted on the doctor’s orders that very night. Our bedroom was silent except for our breaths, mingling in this space that was ours alone for the last three years. As we made love, it was gentle, a whisper of what we once had. Her eyes were closed.
I placed myself over her carefully and tenderly...

used to like walking
frightened of going out, of falling over and over again I open the front door and then close it again and again and decide not to go out, I’d so much rather stay in

The Mysterious Sickness
Bring your beauty onto me
Mysterious and distant
I can only imagine to see
We discovered our magic together
Mileage should never stop our love
Your valued more then any buried treasure
One day i will arrive, when you least suspect
Surprise!! Surprise!!
Let's make love, take off your dress
Your looks and appeal are stunning to my eyes
Your body, so beautifully developed
So sexy honey, I tell no lies
Days & weeks go by
Personality isn't what I like
A few more days, I'm saying goodbye

Fungus Anyone
Fungus creeping under my toes
Athlete's Foot everyone
In case you didn't know
Was showering at some flea-bag motel
This dopey girl chose the place
Wanted to fuck, even if it looked like hell
Itching, burning, peeling skin
She pisses me off
I'm going to rub it on her chin
Toes, number 4 & 5
Have it the worst
This is because of my sex drive
Peroxide cures from what I read
It's a safer remedy
Don't want it to spread
Just remember girls as I said before
You piss me off
I'll stick my fungus...

The Final Resolution
I was discouraged at therapy that my face was hideous
No one knew a sinner unless they looked at their father
The mother of your sons biological abortion
Like a piston
Like a slug waiting to eat salt
Disintegration of the molten force underneath your skin
Go ahead, growl!
Your magical in the eyes of a horse that gave you life
That horse is actually a walrus
A nasty, disgusting, rancid creation that lives on Fruit Loops, Spam and dog biscuits
Her tits look like something from a Picasso painting
Drill a square box onto her forehead ...

Comfort In Sound
lately, I’ve been
having this thought
that I rattle when I walk
jangle limbed
a spine like old church bells
in splintering rafters
teeth grinding
a folk instrument
in my mouth
as I take white pills,
drumming my stomach
in rolling rhythms.
This back is percussion,
you should hear it crashing
a morning’s cymbal
over and over
this symphony of pain—
music
endlessly
repeats

jangle limbed

She was a good wife
Married for over 40 years
She was warm, considerate and always willing & able to help someone
Her talent was making beautiful, colorful gardens all around her property
She also donated her time to the arboretum
This year things have been different for her
She was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer
Her ability to work on the yard and create beautiful, majestic gardens have been impossible
She's very ill
She can't maneuver like she use to
Her husband doesn't have a green thumb

Want to avoid vomiting or hangovers, try this!!
Mike Hunt of Wisconsin missed drinking since contracting a particularly nasty throat ailment. In the fall of 2000, he and his wife, Michelle, devised a clever workaround: Michelle gave her husband a wine enema. It turned out to be an ingenious way of ingesting alcohol. Unfortunately, this way caused alcohol poisoning killing him instantly.

Infection
In the vast intestine of the cosmos we spin.
Humans are viruses and bacteria.
In an eternal dance of chaos and harmony,
we are messengers of the night without the day.
We were born from the dust of distant stars,
we grew up among comets and giants.
Our remains, like meteors, floating,
in the infinite dark trying to eternalize.
We are microorganisms in the immensity,
multiplying, living without direction.
The universe, indifferent to our fate,
observe us in an infected spectacle.
Our actions, so small, so brief, ...

II. Origin of Friendship (CW: Child abuse)
Liquor in his hand, the drunkard sat
and listened as she told it from the start:
In the final days of that most recent flood
when all of us, displaced, corralled, encamped
felt the force of hunger in our pits,
when also was the White Plague freed from ice,
I first met Hul, the boy who trailed The Man.
Though monstrous was The Man, who cained and beat
as though we poor were mongrels, groveling
at supper-time, embarrassing the master,
young Hul would look upon his master’s works
with pangs of empathy behind big eyes ...
