Poems about Identity
#identity
Exploring the meaning of identity within our society. Identity poems explore our personality, uniqueness and lifestyle choices to find out what gives individuals, groups and sub-cultures their identity.
In Between Selves
The mirror image flickers again
Like a buffering screen shorting out.
I watch ghosts of me fade away
As if I am caught in the veil
Waiting for resurrection at last.
Like a buffering screen shorting out.
I watch ghosts of me fade away
As if I am caught in the veil
Waiting for resurrection at last.

Sam I am
That which observes greed is not greed: greed cannot observe itself.
That which observes lust is not lust: lust cannot observe itself.
That which observes anger is not anger: anger cannot observe itself.
That which observes love is not love: love cannot observe itself.
Who is the observer then?
Don't say "I am" because "I" does not exist.
That which observes mind is not mind: mind cannot observe itself.
And discuss.
That which observes lust is not lust: lust cannot observe itself.
That which observes anger is not anger: anger cannot observe itself.
That which observes love is not love: love cannot observe itself.

I hope to see you there
Gentle air fills dying lungs
Under blue skies and bitter chill
Folk tunes playing through blown out speakers
Nervousness fills aching bones
Picking lint off of an expensive sweater without breaking eye contact
How did I get here?
Years of dreaming was never enough
Restlessness and addiction kept me stuck
Until the final push from the one who promised to never let me fall
An open door to the visions that have flooded my brain since adolescence
A bigger view caused for an emotional afternoon
But who am I to...

"Ordinary life" Pt. 2
Hidden behind tragic literature
seeking solace in anything but this place...
this ordinary life she chose.
the white witch found herself longing once more
but this time it was for space - for a chance to breathe again
interruptions occur more often now, this is motherhood.
the task was not explained
loving her kin, though easy... came with a heavy price.
reveling in the sound of rain drops
tap
tap
tapping...
seeking solace in anything but this place...
this ordinary life she chose.
the white witch found herself longing once more

the task was not explained

Bloody Liar
I've contemplated ego
from every vantage point
there's nothing I've discovered
that doesn't disappoint.
It's the CEO of humans
it rules with iron fist
waits to get the whip out
when I'm well and truly pissed.
Its focus is comparing
things you have or have not yet
it has its own perspective
sees everything a threat
Now it speaks
"Your home is not quite big enough
your car is ten years old
arise almighty ego
I will not be controlled.
Your clothes are all so daggy ...

Call Him Mister
Miss miz or misses
Mr T
just call me Wendy
that's fine with me
it's just a name
don't play a game
we're not living
in 1960
Weren't you at the conference that day
I hear myself say
to the Viking from central casting
he was easy to spot
it didn't take a lot
but did he remember me?
no way
I'm Wendy I stated
(a name I've never hated)
to the bearded man with hair of red
and when our hands shook
he gave me a look
I'm Mister Erikson he said
When I'm in front of a class
I'm...

A Reflection
Mirrors will show you what you want to see
Creating your wildest fantasies
They'll make you laugh, they'll make you cry
They'll drive your fears, control your mind
Find the way out, don't stop, keep trying
A realm of crooked mirrors is it truth or is it lying?
The white turns black and black turns white
You can't distinguish wrong from right
Truth is turned from inside out
You're hypnotized, you have nothing but doubt
Your soul is now distorted, depraved
Mirrors have made you their faithful slave
Creating your wildest fantasies
They'll make you laugh, they'll make you cry
They'll drive your fears, control your mind
Find the way out, don't stop, keep trying
A realm of crooked mirrors is it truth or is it lying?

Lamentations
It was morning when I fell upon a rock,
I found myself torn, almost split in half.
Training every day to be highly skilled,
Unaware that I left the house's bolts for someone else with the spanner.
They say, "Travel to see the world, for it's not a circle,"
But roam too much, and you might turn into a fool.
My folks say being consistent is the key,
Yet even standing up comes with its own fee.
Those in the game think they're showing us the light,
But they're the very source of all the chaos we fight.
"Do this, do...

The Huastec People
I see you there by the water's
edge, dear great-great-
great-great-grandmother.
Please, tell me—why have
I been sent back?
Tears rise in me, but I
fear punishment, like Sisyphus,
doomed to forever push this stone.
I no longer have the
strength for it.
So I speak to the trees,
Listen to the grass swaying
in the wind, breathe in the scent
of Mother Earth. Do you not
hear her struggle to breathe?
I read of how humans hunted the
dodo to extinction,
smashing the skulls of the
last two...

Alter Ego
The night feels electric when
you live in the fast lane,
Fast life, faster money,
no brakes, no shame.
We both stare into the witch’s
cauldron, Whispering "fuck it,"
and leap in without hesitation.
I tried to walk the straight path,
to live my life right,
Said my prayers each night,
seeking peace in the fight.
"You used to be ruthless,
you took what you wanted,
A boot to their necks, your
power undaunted. I thought
I buried you deep, thought
you’d die, But you keep
coming...
you live in the fast lane,
Fast life, faster money,
no brakes, no shame.
We both stare into the witch’s
cauldron, Whispering "fuck it,"
and leap in without hesitation.
I tried to walk the straight path,

Said my prayers each night,

Stillness
He asks, "What's on your mind?"
I respond with nothing,
but the silence betrays me—
he sees it in my eyes, the quiet
drift of thought. So again, he asks,
"What's on your mind?"
And I answer, simply, "Life."
He wants to know more,
to pull me from my reverie,
but he knows better
than to break the stillness.
Let me be, lost in wonder,
staring through the window
at the passing trees,
the strangers in their cars,
the signs, the void of motion.
I'm not rude, I’m just...
I respond with nothing,
but the silence betrays me—
he sees it in my eyes, the quiet
drift of thought. So again, he asks,
"What's on your mind?"
And I answer, simply, "Life."
He wants to know more,
to pull me from my reverie,
but he knows better
than to break the stillness.
Let me be, lost in wonder,
staring through the window
at the passing trees,
the strangers in their cars,
the signs, the void of motion.
I'm not rude, I’m just...
