The Definition of Love
Are you at peace?”
It’s not far-fetched of you to ask me
in your prayers each night
and thoughts each day
The much-known concept of lives
swallowed by the living each year
Firstly, when we are physically birthed
and slapped into breath;
secondly, when we wake to purpose
and life slaps us into a vessel
for something greater than ourselves
The lesser-known concept
of two deaths is fully understood
on this side of the veil
Firstly, when our...

Crucifix & Candlelight
In the necropolis
there is no life after sundown
Branches weigh heavy
with its slumber
Here at the ofrenda
we wait for the heart of it
amid sugar skulls
and old photographs
Course salt laid out as a cross
to purify and cleanse
providing courage to remain
and alter a memory
This is the part where we tread
gently, knowing the past is present
camouflaged in the thick space
of enveloping incense
wafting...

Grave raven
In a gloomy place where sadness holds its grip,
Where lost souls wander aimlessly, consumed by grief,
There exists a forgotten realm, where melancholy reigns,
And the mournful echoes of ravens fill the darkest skies.
Within this somber city, where death rules supreme,
A land of withered flowers and memories filled with pain,
A place where lifeless graves stand, a valley of misery,
And ghostly figures dance among the epitaphs we see.
Under the hollow gaze of the moon, on endless still nights,
A crow with ominous feathers spills across...

Understanding Death
I stopped by a gas station today
In some remote piece of the world
It had a sign hanging in the window
Best donuts in the county it read
Nothing like some comfort food
When you're in my condition so
I stopped in for a few...
Shortly after pulling out a funeral
Parade was coming up behind me
As is customary, I pulled over with
My flashers for them, some 90 cars

gravitate towards others to mitigate
The feeling, so I followed them to

first wrongs—last rites
i don’t want to talk about
sickness and death
and funerals and things
for last rites
are the first wrongs
of those who belong
to adam’s throng.
in eden came first wrongs
and today we perpetuate
last rites
but what of the in-between
for from the first wrongs

None of this is fair
Unlike the meticulous planning of a wedding, an obituary serves as the invitations and a few phone calls procures essentials for an interment
Within days the accommodations are booked, the staff ready, the guest of honor prepared, and the room decorated
Memorial cards printed, limos waxed, and even the reception room is filled with fare for those invited to feast
The sounds are discrete at a funeral ceremony, a library silence, an inherent rule of respect I suppose
Friends, families and acquaintances hurt along side you. “I’m sorry for your...

The Bloody Hit…
Hell.. I do not know what me and my Gee was getting into
All I know we were supposed to have met the Crips and their crew
The exchange of the payoff dope was near a cemetery
I’m from the hood and we make a drive pickup in the night, strapped up, and in solidarity
Out the Hummer me and my boys
Pulling back the hammer on our weapons of some high-powerful toys
The scene looked like a set up from the start
Fog swirling around my Vera Wang stilettos, we knee deep in the dush of dark
I told my crew anything moves strange shoot the...

Midnight Moonlight Cemetery Tour
The bus stopped in front of the cemetery gates
And us guests right away felt a chill in the air
As the tour guide all dressed in black waited
With a lantern that barely gave a flickering flare
The tour guide wore a cloak covering her face
She gave creepy and weird vibes all around
But that’s the experience we had paid for
As we stepped into the dark cemetery grounds
The eight of us walked through the graveyard
Deeper into a dimness that had no depth
The midnight moonlight seemed so pale
As the air got colder I could see my...

From Sun to Moon
From Sun to Moon”
Another day’s sun—a soul to rest,
With each tear, a newborn blessed
Fades from sun to moon, moon to sun
And I wonder—where is a star in everyone?
Where are these spirits wandering here
Without stars in a night of souls so clear?
We have seen the sun rise over the graves.
We have seen the lilies blush upon the waves—
But have we seen flowers? Truly? Have we?
Are there more to these blooms than what we see?
They lie o’er these spirits in their sleep without stars,
A sleep that resembles a slumber like ours...

psalm 7
the Resurrection psalm
a psalm of Andrew
1 mark my grave, O Lord;
mark well this spot
in which i sleep;
2 it is a dreamless slumber
and my memories have gone
away from me.
3 the breath i borrowed
with the nostrils
of my dust
has gone back to You, O Lord,
Who made my body
and my breath
a living soul.
4 do not forget me
in this dark place, Most Holy One;

An Insistent Denial of Truth (in all it's insistent interpretations)
Must remember're'call when the medicine
was swallowed
was ingested
was absorbed.
Where I'd lost our imprimatur, it's the first step toward the
freed'm of need, and
a ratified wanting, in
a spectacle of ranting.
Be'Damned if it hasn't begun storming, catacombs being the
only shelter from piercing

Her Blanche Moment
Her Blanche Moment
She still remembers the night the moon rose over Esplanade Avenue with its light penetrating her soul deeper than the sun on a hot summer’s day.
“You know how to make a girl swoon. But what a spooky night this is. Look in the shadows, John. I see ghosts everywhere. Oh, my flirty man. Let’s go to Bourbon Street and listen to some jazz. I know you don’t want to hear me babble on all night.”
“I gave up the Bourbon Street scene long ago. Let’s go home and read together.”
As they pass down Esplanade she feels like an...
