Coming of Age
Thinking back I recall
seeing long spider legs
with a bright smile ear to ear long
On a playful kid full of energy
in search of fun
who didn’t go wrong
Big goofy grin in photobombs
you wouldn’t know Serious
if it introduced itself
Let the cards fall as the dealer hands
Jokers wild with talents
flag the play ref
Some lessons come bitter learned
can’t be watered down
tackle back hold ya stomach strong
Build God’s legacy for your own trophy case
thrive honored at the Top
it's where...

The Inside Place
It’s a thing, right?
when we see our children
heading in a similar direction
as we did long ago
hoping that they listened to our advice
or at least take into consideration
the scars we bear
maybe it’s a trend?
One where we have to let them feel the burn
and let them learn on their own
because life’s lessons are more impressionable
when they are experienced first-hand
maybe I worry too much?
maybe this is also part of the parenting process
letting adult children find their own way
while all you can do is...

This is an imagined reality
where you never left the city,
and we aren’t just strangers turned acquaintances turned friends
who crossed paths a few months ago.
In this little world I’ve built in my head,
we're childhood friends on a rickety old school bus,
always claiming the last row like it's our throne.
We share tiffins packed with love, your mom’s aloo parathas, my poha
trading bites and secrets with equal delight.
We blow bubblegum balloons till they pop on our faces,
and laugh so hard our tummies hurt.

Fight to live
Eighteen dollars to her name
Can’t survive, it’s all the same
In need of food for her kids
Drugs & booze the way she lives
No ambition to get a job
Unless it’s slobbing on someone’s knob
How much lower can you go
You’ll be remembered as a filthy ho
You must fight to live
You must fight to live
You must fight to live
Inside your fucked up selfish mind
Sleazy strip malls is where you hang
Beware the rats with long sharp fangs
Behind the store to get your fix
Fever ignored, getting real sick

Pathetic!!
Rats chewed the hands, lips and nose off a four month old baby in a fleabag apartment building across the street from me. The mother was on PCP. She had her head in the oven trying to kill herself. I asked her if she needed assistance. She said no. I helped her anyway.
People are so pathetic!!

Heartstrings Can Be Troublesome Things
It’s the innocence about the times that I miss most
The way they used to look up
The little voices pulling at the heart
When I used to drive by that church on Washington
There was a moon at the top of the steeple
His little voice would cry out “the moon daddy, the moon”
There was some comfort in hearing that
Yet I knew deep down inside as time would go by
All that would fade away
But that was years ago…
It was as we walked through the museum
That his silence pierced through me
His indifference growing
That...

Perpetual Seeker
I don’t know” is the challenge
a return to childlike innocence
“I don’t know, but I’ll find out” is challenge accepted
awakens the inner detective, researcher, puzzle solver
“To the best of my knowledge” is the reward
praying that my curiosity hunger is never satisfied,
that my thirst for knowledge never abates
that my honest lack of education
will forever supersede my pride
knowing everything, where’s the fun in that
a return to childlike innocence

The Discovery of Coffee
The Discovery of Coffee
Her spirit was first made flesh
before the fall of Atlantis
in the ancient coffee forests
of the Ethiopian plateau
where she was the first
to find out that the bean
was more than something
picked by children for fun
And she was the one of those kids
Who gathered magic beans for play
Only to learn that they made much more
Than a basket full of pretty seeds
But when dropped in a pot
Held over a fire
Became a...

a childhood
A childhood
Stony was the soil of my childhood
A tiny room above the stable
Cold was the night
A straw mattress and mice
Ice crystal on the roof
Dreaming of running somewhere
Anywhere but here
A pale dawn
The sun is white this morning
In the barn animals stir
No more time to dream
Tomorrow he will run away
Stony was the soil of my childhood

On Grandmas and Galaxies
(I haven't been able to write in so long. But this came this morning. I'm fumbling in the dark, and I can't write consistently well anymore--and the metaphors are all wrong--but, this is what came. And Varley, I love you so very much.)
ON GRANDMAS AND GALAXIES
for Varley
Your tiny hands slowly unravel the purple yarn I was planning on using, along with the orange, to learn to crochet with. I wanted to make you a blanket of stars but my own hands are not practiced enough and it seems I have given up for now. I am wanting more and more to make you things. To...

A naughty girl
Once upon a time a little girl was going to take her doll for a walk when there she was, meeting two nice little birds
She dropped them a pretty little bow and said to them,
"Good afternoon, little birds, will you play with me?"
"I have some lovely candy in my little bag"
"I'll give you some"
One of the birds said, "I have no objection"
and the other said, "Neither do I"
They enjoyed themselves very much until it was nearly evening
Then the little birds said, "We want to go away now"
But...

An Odd Tale
Some monsters have always said
There are parents under my bed
One of their names is Jeb
The other goes by Meg
There are parents under my bed
They won’t eat me as long as their fed
There are parents under my bed
Their complexions are lumpy & red
There are parents under my bed
My dreams are filled with dread
There are parents under my bed
I’d like to shoot them with lead
There are parents under my bed
Must act now before I wind up dead
There are parents under my bed
They say this illusion is in my head
