Word Crafting
I look at words
as tools and materials upon a bench
lifting and holding each
weighing it up in consideration,
testing out the ring
to see if it is sound,
knowing that in that short time
if I find it to my liking,
if it just fits,
then I will definitely use it
somehow;
cobbling others around it
satellites and limbs
for the obsessed heart.
Maybe shelving the others away for another day.

Down to the wire
It’s too late; I’m out of time
for all the stuff that’s on my mind
I have to spit some words out, right?
Less than an hour ‘til midnight
I’d planned a poem to stir the soul
but I fell down a rabbit hole
of intellectual masturbation
leading to deep procrastination
Perennial wisdom is what I sought
instead, these rhymes are all I’ve got.

Words given at sunrise
Meticulous mayhem”--
What a paradoxical phrase to wake up with!
And yet, there it was this morning,
begging to be put to use;
but I had no idea how.
This evening, an assignment I’ve chosen;
learning history, politics, spirituality,
violence inflicted by country and church
on indigenous brothers and sisters;
stories gut-wrenching and hard,
but white woman’s tears serve no purpose here;
my job is to listen and learn.

Music Passion Nine
Disco Ball Two
Public, adolescent persona said
oh hell no to Disco
In private the music
I couldn’t disparage
Funk, R&B, and Soul united
formed a far out
tantalizing marriage
My square brain reminded
“dude you’re Levi’s 501’s
and the Beach Boys”
my groovin’ feet suggested
“Embrace your inner,
bell-bottomed Angels Flights,
DeBarge, and Commodores”
Ohio Players’ songs
were my grammar school favorites
their scandalous album covers
were from very nature sent
stunning naked lady...

Hollow Metal Memories
I would like to stomp around
in a custom robot:
'mech' is the correct term,
is that too much to ask?
Apparently so;
the Japanese seem to have an affinity for it,
but the complex tactic algorithms
never really did it for me.
And focus on a story can get shot;
I came for the big robots,
not the character development
- the only changes I want
are to armour and arms and colours.
It would seem that tactics
are the fashion now:
shuffling mechs around,
like an overblown three-card Monte,
and I would...

It's In The Eyes, It's In The Smile
Of “agua fiestas” be wary
those have-dark-cloud-will-travel minions
sure on your party to rain
their dastardly designs
in charm holstered, concealed carry
quick draw ready caustic opinions
their aim to despirit, demoralize
preying on vulnerable minds
Instead cherish the soul builders
whom, like a comfy brassiere,
lift and support
their sisters and brothers
ones who recognize,
and accentuate
the good in others
that care unconditionally
and love without fear

Endings, middles, maybe beginnings
And just like that, I reached the end of my notebook.
Didn’t see it coming.
I thought there were pages left,
but they were full of notes from a work meeting –
notes I apparently felt compelled to take
(or to be seen taking)
in the book I happened to have on hand -
notes I never looked at again.
I didn’t get around to buying a replacement;
I thought I had more time.
And now I can’t because it’s not “essential”
and we’re back to that again…
trapped at home,
awaiting test results,
running room service for two ...

Frailty
The jarring times of reminder,
of frailty:
and being human
and at the whims of the physical or unknown;
a sudden surging sense
of sickness,
or a detail
momentarily misplaced,
or a movement
that elicits a twinge
without the remembered elasticity.
Though thankfully
these are but mere moments,
with enough vigour
to outrun inevitable atrophy,
only personal frailty
in comparison to others
and not a decline of the self's attributes
yet.

Music Passion Eight
Disco Ball One
When in grammar school
to hate Disco was cool
what was so great
about three brothers,
fully grown men,
who could sing higher notes
than I could at age ten?
the first line of “Staying Alive”
I thought quite ironic
sung in falsetto harmonic
And yet it was
“Night’s on Broadway” I chose
my inept dancing to expose
when in 6th grade
assigned a popular song
to choreograph
In front of class
our performance began
In line Temptation’s style
I heard some kids laugh ...

How to pray
I wonder if the church has ruined prayer;
made it a formula that has to be learned
a series of acceptable utterances
to be recalled through mnemonics
like
Adoration
Confession
Thanksgiving
Supplication
or some other series of compulsory components
counted on five fingers…
Every prayer an exam,
testing one’s memory of essential elements
But really only ever testing
the ability to stay awake while keeping still
--a test I always failed.
I gave up those prayers
for conversations
while...

David and Goliath ltd
I always find it interesting
How size sometimes hampers:
That specifically with companies
It is the smaller ones
Or less mainstream
That provide a better quality service or product,
While the larger conglomerates
Have the arrogant audacity to assume
That it is their way or the highway;
That simply by size alone they will survive
Like an obnoxious iceberg in the changing climate.
Then again,
It could just be me projecting myself
And liking the quirky ones rather the biggest ones.

Connoisseurs of Life
Gone are the days
of the venerable sage
at least in
some Western societies
It’s no longer safe
to act your age
If one of good fortune
reaches their fifties
Skills, only yesterday,
considered superior
are by managerial luddites,
deemed now inferior
accumulated wisdom
dismissed with derision
Informed advice
no longer taken serious
real world experience
treated as spurious
carefully cultivated
wealth of knowledge
apparently worth less
than one fresh out of...
