Night

Night after night into bed alone, which side to sleep on tonight?
Tossing the cushions to the floor and switch on the TV
Clambering under cold covers naked missing the warm of another body
Arms wrapping round pillow, cuddles imagined in dreams
Legs trapped in the duvet giving faint impression of it being shared
Lying at midnight listening to breathing soft and slow
Sounds only interrupted by crying emanating from some documentary
Neighbour scrapes furniture across the ceiling and stomps off
Bathroom sounds are faint till the flush of their toilet and then running water
Day after day I wake up alone, switch of the alarm and start all over
