a poet never knows it
phoebe, write your poetry
and then when you're grown
they'll leave you alone
it's such a terrible crime
you're next to nothing
till you die, till you die
some men never make it
some men make it to the top
still a poet never knows it
no, not until he drops
you can hang in there, mama
write your soothing songs
rock-n-roll to your music
till the music's gone
when it's all over
then you're on, then you're on
phoebe, write your poetry
and then when you're gone
they'll acknowledge you
they always do
it's still a shame just the same
honey, they just never do
acknowledge you
till you die, till you die
and then when you're grown
they'll leave you alone
it's such a terrible crime
you're next to nothing
till you die, till you die
some men never make it
some men make it to the top

Oh, I'm here first!
Yay!
Now this is a beaut, Faith.
Love this so much, despite its oh-so true and sad sentiments....
Curious, though.
Who is Phoebe?
(Incidentally, if I may, "phoebe" needs to be followed by a comma....maybe?)
Please, I'm so glad you're consistent in yer penning, lass :-D
Thanks so much for sharing!
Peace
Tides
Ps. Cool pic, hey.
Dig that!
Pps. Hey, gotta tell ya....THIS would make quite a song, hey.
Has a swell, rolling energy......just a thought :-)

Thank you for your wonderful remarks, Tides. Yes, you are, indeed, first. I'm honored to be on yer reading list.
Here are your commas which being the rebel I am, I neglected to put after Phoebe. I believe this now makes me technically correct in a sense...does it read better now?
Oh, I'm glad you liked the poem so much and the pic.
As for Phoebe, she represents all the young aspiring poets whose work has yet to be discovered. In this sense she is a real person. I chose that name because it rhymes so well with poetry.
Thanks for the stop by and for your wonderful feedback!
Cheers!
Faith
P.S. It does seem sort of song-like. I agree with you there, Tides :)

Now now....didn't mean for you to feel that it needed to be TECHNICALLY correct, hey.
Really.
Just for flow....and was really just saying, ok.
Please, I'll accept, if you wana gimme a kick now... ;-)
Must reiterate...that pic really is cool, you know.
Fits so well with the context....of derelict genius ...and only until death ....can the poet then claim anything....by which time, of course, it's rather superfluous...for the poet!
You write swell poetry, lass...remember that.
And don't let anyone tell yer any different, now, you hear.
I mean that.
It's not about the words as such....more about the energy and ....actually, truth be told....the feedback is important!
Don't you agree?
Peace to ye

No harm done, Tides. I wouldn't dream of kicking you. I should thank you and i do for making the song/poem flow more easily...
I'm glad my efforts at picking a photo for my poem is appreciated. I was hoping it would work!
Now, for your question, I agree somewhat. Diction matters because it is the words you choose for your your poem along with your style that make the work uniquely yours. My mentor taught me the importance of simplicity and brevity both of which I embrace.
Feedback is like the icing on the cake. It's wonderful when you receive it. Mostly, I relish the fact that I'm being read. Thank you for saying I write swell. There is a certain energy or is it spirit within ones words that seeps through them that really matters. You are right about that. What thought-provoking things you have brought up here. :)
Thanks for your cool comments.

Fantastic!
All fine and fitting stuff you say.
Agreed.
I think your poem makes one reflect on the sadness of reality; on the converse, poetry sites (like DUP, especially:-) make that reality a bit less...
Why?
Cos, well...I think WE appreciate one another here and respect the efforts of fellow poets, aspiring to share ideas and ....sort of, put it out there....
You dig?
Cool stuff, man. Cool stuff, indeed!
Peace be to ye now, Faith ;-)

Yeah, I dig it. Being able to interact with other poets is why I joined DUP. I agree we do appreciate what our fellow poets have accomplished. I thoroughly enjoy the friendships I have here at DUP.
Cheers!

Re: a poet never knows it
Hello me dahling Faith.
A resounding nod from me on this!
I am absolutely in love with the piece.
The naration is very different pen to your usual and I must say that it is a lovely one. I like the mix of raw truth brought in a lovely sing of caring and love.
You have out done yourself Faith, I am eager to see how it unfolds from here. The voice is hard core rock 'n roll.
Yaaaaay!!!
mwah -x-
I am a fan of repitition, but many get it very wrong. In this piece you taught us all how to do it! brilliant...just brilliant!

This is one of the loveliest poems I've read, so far, on the site. It is filled with music & light, Faith. So very beautiful & sounds like a song... to my ear! Great title & photo, as well. ON my reading list, for sure! Awesome, AMAZING, wonderfully unique poem. Can't praise it enough! :)

Sad but true. As a frustrated over the hill rock n roller and long in the tooth poet I especially liked the third stanza. Very nicely done.
