Since Mother Died

Oh daddy you look so sad
Since mother died you’ve cried
And cried but not in front of us
Such is your pride
Brave daddy how can I help, support
To what can I resort to be of succour
In your hour of need

You stayed with her you prayed for her
Though her mind was lost
And she knew you not
you tried and tried always at her side
Even when they took her away
Two busses and ten miles each way
Every day you went
Now you’re spent

Your hair once so thick rich and brown
Just a wispy silver down
You’ve lost weight of late
Hardly play when I bring my kids around
They’ve noticed even them so young ask
Why is grand dad so sad
Will he go to grandma soon
Will you daddy we don’t want you to

You the first man I fell in love with
What was I then
A little girl of nine or ten?
Tucked into bed stories read
Kiss upon my head out with the light
Tender good night

At the seaside saved my life
Li-lo swept out to sea
No hesitation swam out for me
Kept me calm pulled me from harm
We could both have been dead
But all you did was hold me
Told me you loved me
And stroked my head

Now I’m the parent you’re the child
Seems strange when did it change
Now I tuck you into bed
And plant a kiss upon your head
Can’t bear the thought of losing you too
Will you stay with us
Oh please daddy do
