In Sanity's Refrain

I won't go away, i'll always be;
That's what he says to me.
Try to burn me down, says he.
You have already.
The days you put a flame to me,
The daze of nights incendiary,
Combustion of your own fuel only;
An ashen cry i'll always be
A coal black sky tormenting thee.
I tell myself you'll go away.
I'll lock you up and lose the key.
I'll tuck away and there you'll stay.
Live or die, just stay away.
Stowed a corner of dark and dust,
A cell of silence, to rot and rust;
Foe's compliance, one day i trust
Will hark my desperate plea.
Still, you'll always flee to me,
I know.
Days or years you'll wait to meet.
Rise, a vapor from sullen retreat
To drift my way on winds too fleet.
You'll always be a bit of me,
You'll always be with me.
I can turn a thousand corners
And welcome thoughts to creep
That maybe, just maybe,
I'm clear and free;
But around the next, there you'll be.
Season's hexes come and go.
Spring's ghost blossoms;
Too vexed to reap.
To scorching days that never leave
And whittle away all sleep;
To falling amber trails of leaves,
Too brittle and frail to keep;
To winter's rains you down around,
All through the gutter's sounds
Of tip tapping drips of tears you bleed,
And always have, it seems.
Blood you need from me, it seems.
Blood you need, so blood i'll give.
You need my blood, i'll slice the vain.
If blood and tears will wash the pain,
A river will flow forth to you.
Oceans will rise before it's through.
Skies will split and lightning fork
And crimson floods will drown the plain;
Sanguine pools will flush the drain.
Take what you want, leave what you will,
My speech will speak the stain.
If i bleed now, i'll bleed to you.
If i need bow, i'll bow to you.
Whither i crawl, i'll crawl to you.
If i'm a fool, i'll fool you too,
In sanity's refrain.
