Dear John
Dear John, sounds too formal
for someone so familiar
I think I'd know your face in the dark.
Sometimes I think we're just too close
to ever be close enough
but sometimes I think
maybe times are just tough.
I can't deny my mind wonders
what is held outside of our door.
It's hard to make a move when
I don't know what I'm looking for.
Not like I used too
when I knew it was you.
And I know you have to see it
in the way I touch your skin.
there's no way, you don't feel it
when I slip away again.
I'm not one to clean a mess
just make it and then run
oh god, how did I screw up this one?
Dear John, it's like you said
no such thing as a sure thing
bet you sure thought I was a sure thing.
I never meant to do this
but in truth I never do.
you won't believe me
when I say it's not you.
And I know you have to see it
in the way I touch your skin.
there's no way, you don't feel it
when I slip away again.
I'm not one to clean a mess
just make it and then run
oh god, how did I screw up this one?
Dear John, I never call you John
but I can't do this like I would
or I'd never open my mouth.
I know you'll get angry
and call me a liar
tell me to pack my things
and go die in a fire.
Out of the mouths of those
who used to love us
come the cruelest things
when the gloves are off.
And I know you have to see it
in the way I touch your skin.
there's no way, you don't feel it
when I slip away again.
I'm not one to clean a mess
just make it and then run
